Inherited from Byzantine Greek σωπαίνω (sōpaínō), from Ancient Greek σιωπῶ (siōpô), contracted form of σιωπάω (siōpáō), with deletion of [i] between [s] and vowel plus the verb suffix -αίνω (-aíno).[1]
