Etymology

From արեւ (arew) +‎ ելք (elkʻ). The formation is an Iranian calque. Compare Parthian 𐫟𐫇𐫡𐫀𐫘𐫀𐫗 (xwrʾsʾn /⁠xwarāsān⁠/), Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (hwl-ʾsʾn' /⁠xwar-āsān⁠/, sunrise, east, literally sunrise).
