Etymology

Of uncertain origin. Martirosyan tentatively suggests derivation from Proto-Indo-European *sél-e/os- with Ancient Greek ἕλος (hélos, marsh-meadow) and Sanskrit सरस् (sáras-, lake, pool) as cognates.
