Proto-Germanic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From earlier *swumdan (compare Gothic 𐍃𐍅𐌿𐌼𐍃𐌻 (swumsl, “pool”)), with quasi-Indo-European form *swm̥-tó-m (though whether the root existed in Proto-Indo-European is under question). By synchronic analysis, a nominal derivative of *swimmaną (“to swim”); see there for more.[1]
