Nieuw-Vossemeer
Appearance
Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as Nijeuwe Vossemaer in 1573-1576. Derived from nieuw (“new”) and a compound of Middle Dutch vorsch (“fresh, potable, dammed-in”) and meer (“pool, watercourse”). The element vorsch was quickly reinterpreted as vos (“fox, Vulpes vulpes”). The element nieuw was added to distinguish the settlement from Oud-Vossemeer.
