Borrowed from Ancient Greek πέντε (pénte, “five”); ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *pénkʷe. Compare Persian پنج, Northern Kurdish pênc, Ossetian фондз (fonʒ), Pashto پنځه (pindzə), Sanskrit पञ्चन् (páñcan). Doublet of five, which was inherited from Proto-Germanic.
