[edit]From one of the many variants of Arabic راجِل (rājil), رَجُل (rajul). Perhaps a backformation from the plural رَجّالة (rajjāla) or a singularisation of the plural رُجّال (rujjāl). Doublet of ريل (rayil, “husband”).
