Vintage Military Helmet

A Luftwaffe Stahlhelm, worn over a flying helmet, as an attempt to protect against flak. Aircrew would hammer the sides out of a standard M35 or M40 steel helmet to allow room for underlying earpieces etc. Helmet liners were often stripped out and replaced with the minimum of glued-in padding. Improvised chinstraps were riveted to the rim of the helmet skirt. It wasn't until 1944 that a practical purpose-built Fliegerstahlhelm was finally issued to Luftwaffe aircrew

When the United States entered the First World War on the side of the Allies in 1917, the major powers of Europe had been fighting for nearly three years. In that time, the front lines on the Western Front had become nearly static, with trenches that stretched from Switzerland in the south to the English Channel in the north. This environment had caused the combatant armies to adapt their weapons and equipment. One such piece, the steel helmet, was born out of this necessity.
