1 Briefly, climate change is the phenomenon of the cumulative and long-term shift in
2 weather patterns over many decades. Rising average temperatures across the planet
3 (frequently called “global warming”) are one result, but just one of many (more on that
4 below).
5 The primary culprit in climate change is burning fossil fuels, which leads to more heat in
6 the atmosphere than the Earth can safely handle as explained a little later. This extra heat
7 causes average temperatures to rise across the planet and in our oceans, which disrupts
8 our seasons and all kinds of natural processes.
9 For our planet, the consequences of continued warming and climate change are immense.
10 Our climate will continue to change, but how much is in our hands. Scientists tell us we
11 can still avoid the worst climate impacts if we slash emissions from burning fossil fuels
12 and hold global warming to 1.5 degrees.
FOSSIL FUELS
3 | Inglés Guía de autoaprendizaje 2.do año de bachillerato
3 Inglés Guía de autoaprendizaje 2.do año de bachillerato
1 The cause of climate change – and health threat to millions. Fossil fuels are sources of
2 energy like coal, oil, and natural gas formed by ancient bones (you know, fossils) decaying
3 in conditions of immense pressure over millions of years. For centuries, humans have
4 burned fossil fuels to stay warm and more recently, to power industrial machines and
5 vehicles of all kinds. On their own, fossil fuels produce energy relatively cheaply and on
6 demand, helping grow our economies for many years. The first reason is that burning fossil
7 fuels produces carbon pollution and other greenhouse gases that 8 – together on a planet-
8 wide scale – trap more heat than the Earth can handle and drive 9 climate change.
CARBON POLLUTION
1 Carbon pollution is the excess carbon dioxide that comes from burning fossil fuels. Carbon
2 dioxide is a natural greenhouse gas that traps heat from the sun in the atmosphere – a
3 phenomenon known as “the greenhouse effect” (see below).
4 The excess carbon dioxide becomes carbon pollution that traps more and more heat. This
5 extra heat throws the Earth’s delicate cycles and seasons out of balance, changing our
6 climate and leading to everything from lethal heatwaves to faster-spreading diseases.
The excess carbon dioxide that comes from burning fossil fuels is called carbon pollution.
Circle your choice. TRUE FALSE
What is carbon dioxide?
In line 4, what is a synonym for the word pollution?

THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT
1 Ever walk into a greenhouse and feel how the air trapped inside is warmer than the air
2 outside? The sun shining through the glass walls helps warm the air, while the glass traps
3 most of the heat inside. The Earth works in much the same way.
4 The Earth absorbs some of this solar radiation as heat in the land and oceans. But the
5 planet’s different surfaces also reflect most of this heat energy back into the atmosphere.
6 Some of this heat escapes back into space, but some is trapped by greenhouse gases like
7 carbon dioxide and methane, wrapping the Earth in a blanket of warm air.
8 The challenge we face with the greenhouse effect is that the more greenhouse gases
9 filling the atmosphere, the more heat they trap. When levels of these gases rise above
10 what the planet can handle through natural processes like photosynthesis, they trap more
11 heat than is safe, driving climate change.
1 In practice, “clean energy” and “renewable energy” both refer to sources of Energy that
2 use natural factors and forces to produce electricity.
3 Renewables have a critical role to _______ in our fight for a sustainable future because
4 unlike fossil fuels, they do not produce carbon pollution or any other heat-trapping
5 greenhouse gases. Which means they can generate electricity without driving climate
6 change.
The terms “clean energy” and “renewable energy” are the same.
Circle your choice. TRUE FALSE
Renewables also produce carbon pollution.
