★ ¿Que hora es? Is used to ask for the time in Spanish

What do you notice?.


Why do you think to say 'it's 1:00', we say 'es la una',
and for all the other hours we use 'son las’?.

Think of 1:00 as being singular, and the other hours, 2-


12, as being plural. That is why we use 'es la una' and
'son las dos, son las tres, etc.'

You can also use the word media (half an hour/30


minutes)

Es la una y media. (It’s half past one.)

Son las dos y media (It’s half past one.)

★ To differentiate between a.m. and p.m. use the expressions de la mañana,


de la tarde and de la noche.

Minutes can be added to the hour using the word y (and).

Es la una y cinco. (It’s five minutes past one.)

Son las tres y doce. (It’s twelve minutes past three.)


Son las cinco y veintitrés. (It’s twenty three minutes past five.)

Telling the minutes from 31-39

To tell the minutes from 31-59 we use another structure.


In English, we have two different ways of telling this time: we can say 'It's 5:45' or we can say 'It's a
quarter to six.'

Minutes can be subtracted from the hour using the word menos (less).

-Es la una menos cinco.

It’s five minutes to one (12:55)

-Son las tres menos doce.


It’s twelve minutes to three. (2:48)

-Son las tres menos cuarto.


It’s quarter to three. (2:45)

Let's look at the minutes 31-50


in more detail as we review the new structure

Time: 8:50
1. First we have to round up to the next hour. So we know the first part of our structure is Son las nueve.

2. Now we have to see how many minutes until 9:00. How many minutes until 9:00? 10.
So we can express 8:50 as Son las nueve menos diez, literally, 9:00 minus 10.
And as we would say in English, 'It's ten to nine.'
Examples:
1. 4:45- Son las cinco menos cuarto
2. 11:32- Son las doce menos veintiocho
3. 6:54- Son las siete menos seis These last two can be tricky:
4. 1:47- Son las dos menos trece. Even though it is 1:47, the following hour is 2, which is why we say Son las 2
menos trece.
5. 12:58- Es la una menos dos. After 12, the next hour is 1, so we use the singular form Es la una menos dos.
