Movies Maria star Angelina Jolie hopes there isn't a biopic made about her life: 'That gets the most insane question award' Jolie's latest film, "Maria," is a biography of opera singer Maria Callas. By Ryan Coleman Updated on December 4, 2024 10:21AM EST Comments Angelina Jolie, star of the Oscar-bound Maria Callas biopic Maria, has mixed thoughts about biopics. "That gets the most insane question award," Jolie recently told The Times in response to a question about what a Pablo Larraín biopic of her own life would look like. Larraín previously directed Natalie Portman and Kristen Stewart in cinematic looks at the lives of Jacqueline Kennedy and Princess Diana. Now the master of great-and-tragic-lady biopics directs Jolie. "When you're a public person and you're playing her," Jolie continued, "you're conscious of how you would hate for somebody to interpret your life or think they understand your life, so we tried to be thoughtful. Let's hope there isn’t one about my life." Samir Hussein/WireImage Unfortunately for Jolie, her storied life is prime material for a flashy biopic. Even though she's taken a notable step back from the limelight over the past decade and a half to attend to the duties of being a mother to six children and UN Ambassador for Peace, her career is still legendary by Hollywood standards. It wouldn't, in fact, be surprising to see Larraín's Angelina announced down the road. But Jolie prefers her privacy. Angelina Jolie transforms in weird, whimsical, haunting trailer for new, Oscar-buzzed Maria Callas biopic Jolie fully committed herself to the task of embodying the legendary diva. Larraín told Entertainment Weekly in a November interview that he was "in shock" when he finally saw Jolie sing after months of training, which he described as "burning herself" with raw emotion. "I was moved to tears as I saw her burning herself to the point that I think it concludes the movie in an operatic way; it becomes a beautiful canvas of Maria's life, someone that has found an operatic act in performance," he continued. Pablo Larrain/Netflix Angelina Jolie reveals she was 'terribly nervous' learning to sing live opera for new Maria movie Jolie had a mountain to climb in learning to harness the extraordinary power Callas was known to unleash during her live performances. "I had somebody in my life who was not kind to me about singing," she revealed in August. "It was a relationship I was in. And so I just assumed I couldn’t really sing. I’d been to theater school, so it was weird that it even had an effect on me. I just kind of adapted to this person’s opinion. So it took me getting past a lot of things to start singing." Like Spencer and Jackie before it, Maria isn't a traditional biopic that covers the full sweep of Callas' life. Instead, Larraín zeroes in on a critical passage of time. Maria follows the American-born Greek soprano through the final week of her life, frail and alone, over four years since her last public performance. Callas may have objected to it, as Jolie objects to the prospect of a film about her. But for the curious, Maria is currently in a limited theatrical run and will premiere on Netflix on Dec. 11.
