We’re not too sure what South Africa and Cork have in common, but that didn’t stop a political party involving the rebel county in its election campaign.
A picture of a South African election poster has been making people giggle as the poster referenced a well known area in Cork.
The African National Congress (ANC) sign was displayed in Nelson Mandela Bay in South Africa and a typo in the slogan on the poster had people scratching their heads.
Instead of reading: ‘Let’s grow South Africa together’, the poster actually read: ‘Let’s grow South Africa Togher’.
What made it even more embarrassing for the party, South African president Cyril Ramaphosa was pictured smiling beside the phrase.
Many of these have popped up around Nelson Mandela Bay today. Needless to say, I didn't expect anything more from the ANC. Well done @CyrilRamaphosa pic.twitter.com/3IN5PwQYiZ

Once the mistake was pointed out by South African social media star Renaldo Gouws, people began making links to the Cork City suburb.
Ahh yes… Togher is huge in South Africa! It’s the small details really 🙄🤔🙄 pic.twitter.com/NHexzFq7D7

‘Nobody picked this up? Not one person. No? That’s the problem. Nobody’s working togher anymore. Anyway… Most of the letters are there right?’
Apparently Togher is an Irish suburb in Cork City. The finest single malt whiskeys come from that part of the world. Let’s indulge, shall we! pic.twitter.com/wkfovzyGib

Another added: ‘Asking the people of Ireland to help us build SA is maybe not such a bad idea…’

A third joked: ‘Civil war imminent in the People’s Republic Of Cork, as Southsiders Togher cedes to join South Africa!’
