Fallout 3 Set a Gaming Standard So Impossible Even Fallout 5 Can Never Top It

Fallout 5 can do anything it wants to, but it can't match one of the best parts of Fallout 3 that gamers can't get enough of.

SUMMARY

  • Fallout 5 is one of Bethesda's most anticipated games.
  • However, the title is still years away from launch as the studio is busy with Elder Scrolls 6.
  • Whatever Todd Howard and his team do in Fallout 5, it simply won't match the best part about Fallout 3.

Even though Bethesda hasn’t visited the Fallout in years, the post-apocalyptic franchise has enjoyed a lot of success in 2024. All thanks to the Amazon Prime streaming series, crossovers, and expansions, old and new fans can’t wait for the Fallout 5.

Unfortunately, it’s going to be a long while before gamers can get their hands on Fallout 5, as Bethesda has multiple other projects in the works right now. While the game will undoubtedly evolve from its predecessor, it’s never going to match the work Todd Howard and his team brought in Fallout 3.

When Fallout 3 debuted all the way back in 2008, the game received a lot of praise for its attention to detail. It was Bethesda’s first dip into the post-apocalyptic franchise, and the studio had completely nailed it.

Even though it’s been 16 long years since the release of this game, players still can’t get enough of its opening shots. Seriously, it’s the ultimate opening sequence in any Fallout game we’ve ever seen, and it would be incredibly hard for Bethesda to make anything that tops it in future games.

Coming out from the Vault into the Capital Wasteland is an unforgettable experience. It’s quite funny when you first see the “Scenic Overlook” sign and then notice the barren wasteland that’s just beyond it. Bethesda did quite an incredible job detailing the post-apocalyptic land and reminding us of the sheer destruction.

It’s going to be almost impossible for Fallout 5 to match the bleak, grim, and absolutely dreadful environment that gamers loved in the third entry. However, considering the fact that the title still hasn’t hit the development stages, Bethesda still has time to learn from its previous hit and think of ways to elevate it.

Fallout 5 desperately needs revamped dialogue system

It’s not just the opening scene that the next Fallout game needs to elevate; it’s also the dialogue system. Let’s be honest; one of the biggest issues with Fallout 4 was the game’s dialogue options, which basically boiled down to the selection of one-sided options.

Whenever you’re talking to NPCs in Fallout 4, it’s just deciding how much your character is going to be rude, nice, or inquisitive, and not going through nuanced and believable approaches. Players are forced into a particular outcome, and the real choice is what the “types” of conversations they want to have.

Starfield did improve upon this issue and removed the four-option system, giving players more freedom. However, once again, the choices were similar and lacked any major impact on the game. Most of the time, player decisions barely impact quests and just change NPCs’ responses.

Considering the fact that Fallout is an RPG game, players expect that dialogues should completely transform outcomes of NPC interactions, story moments, and character relationships. Fallout 5 desperately needs a revamped dialogue system and delivery, considering Bethesda’s competition has already outsmarted it in this regard.

With that said, what would you like to see in Fallout 5? Let us know in the comments below.
