The Mandalorian Season 2: The Return Of The Jedi

Featured Video

With just a few weeks till the second season of The Mandalorian premiers on Disney+, the anticipation can hardly be contained. As Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin/Mando returns with Baby Yoda to explore new frontiers, the latest trailer of the second season of The Mandalorian might have hinted at some classic Star Wars elements.

The Mandalorian

Created by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian is a bold and heretical approach towards Star Wars. An unlikely candidate to revive the failing franchise, The Mandalorian has won 15 Emmy Awards nominations, including Best Series and Visuals. As the billion-dollar franchise is yet to find solid ground, Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian might just be the push it needs.

Set in a simpler time when the Jedi were still a myth and the Galactic Empire was burnt to the ground, The Mandalorian has adopted a different path, unlike most Star Wars projects. By deciding to leave the Skywalkers, Sith-Lords, and Solos behind, the show just focuses on a laconic and fearsome Mandalorian and a Force-sensitive mysterious child from Master Yoda’s race.

In the first season of The Mandalorian, Din Djarin develops a paternal relationship with the Child (Baby Yoda) after he finds him as a part of his bounty hunting mission. However, the Child is wanted by sinister forces all across the galaxy, including a former Galactic Empire officer turned warlord, Moff Gideon. Played by Breaking Bad alumnus Giancarlo Esposito, Moff Gideon is a diabolical character who wishes to have the Child for himself.

Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian

In the season finale of the first season of The Mandalorian, the primary antagonist of the show, Moff Gideon revealed a major artifact in his possession which dates back to thousands of years in Star Wars history. After the destruction of his TIE fighter plane, Moff Gideon emerged out of the debris wielding the legendary darksaber, which originally belongs to the Mandalorian tribe.

Though it is yet to be established how the ancient darksaber came into Moff Gideon’s possession, the second season of the show will feature its first lightsaber battle. As Moff Gideon would face-off against an unknown opponent possessing a lightsaber, it is safe to assume that The Mandalorian is gradually picking up on the myth of the Jedi.

In the fifth episode of the first season (Chapter 5: The Gunslinger), Din Djarin paid a visit to the desert planet of Tatooine. Though the planet might be the farthest from the bright center of the universe, Tatooine is the closest to the Star Wars mythos. The home planet of both Anakin and Luke Skywalker, Tatooine is a special place with spectacular sunsets in the galaxy far, far away.

In the trailer for the second season, Din Djarin and Baby Yoda once again visit Tatooine for unknown reasons. In of the scenes, WWE superstar turned actor Sasha Banks also makes her appearance as a mysterious cloaked woman who vanishes like a wisp of air. As Sasha Banks’ character in the show is yet to be revealed, her attire did remind us of the Jedi.

The trailer also focuses on an ice planet, which we believe is the planet Ilum. Featured in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Jedi: Fallen Order, the icy planet also plays a major role in establishing the Jedi threat in The Mandalorian. The planet Ilum was an important place for the Jedi Masters as it had Kyber Crystals which were essential for making lightsabers. The icy planet was also featured in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as it was turned into Starkiller Base by the First Order.

However, the Jedi who might actually appear in The Mandalorian is actually a former member of the Jedi Order, a Force-Sensitive Outcast, and the charismatic leader of the Rebel Forces, Ahsoka Tano. The primary protagonist of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Ahsoka Tano is a formidable leader and a warrior who has been rumored to appear in the second season of The Mandalorian. Rumored to be played by Rosario Dawson, the leader of the Rebel Forces might make her first live-action appearance against Moff Gideon for the darksaber. Though news of the casting has been kept under wraps, it is safe to assume that the Outer Rim will be having a few more new faces this season.

The Mandalorian returns on 30th October 2020 exclusively on Disney+.
