Dry chemical fire extinguishers are multi-purpose fire extinguishers that can put out Class ABC flames. Dry powder fire extinguishers of the AB Class are frequently utilized in both business and residential structures. It puts out a fire by causing a chemical interaction with the flame. When it’s sprayed on hot, smoldering surfaces, the particles expand to form a barrier that suffocates oxygen, preventing the fire from spreading. Furthermore, it is a poor conductor of electricity.

When to Use It and How Does It Work?

The material utilized is the major distinction between various dry powder extinguishers. When the dry powder is sprayed on the fire, it turns into foam, which covers the source of the fire and cuts off the supply of oxygen entirely, causing the fire to extinguish. This is to be used for fires Class A, B & C. Ordinary solid combustibles such as paper, wood, fabric, and some polymers are classified as Class A. Class B includes flammable liquids that are best put out by smothering, such as alcohol, ether, oil, gasoline, and grease.

Electrical equipment, appliances, and wiring in which a nonconductive extinguishing chemical is used to avoid harm from electrical shock are classified as Class C. Water is not to be used.

Dry power fire extinguishers are identified by a blue label and are hazardous if breathed, as well as reducing visibility. This extinguisher is excellent for industries that use chemical operations, including as welding and flame cutting, as well as garage forecourts and commercial boiler rooms. Dry powder extinguishers designed for use on combustible metals are also available.

Dry chemical fire extinguishers are also known as: ABC fire extinguishers, Multi-purpose fire extinguisher and Dry powder fire extinguishers.

Types of ABC Dry Chemical Fire Extinguishers

There are two types of dry powder extinguisher: Standard and Specialist.

Standard dry powder fire extinguishers are extremely flexible and can put out almost any type of fire. However, they are not authorized for use in tight spaces. They’re used to put out flames involving combustible solids like paper, wood, and textiles (Class A); flammable liquids like gasoline, diesel, and paint (Class B); and flammable gases like butane and methane (Class C).

Specialist dry powder fire extinguisher are used on fires involving metal lithium (L2 powder extinguishers only) and all other flammable metals (M28 powder extinguishers only).

Do Not Use Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher When....

Dry chemical fire extinguishers are not advice to use on the following – fire involving cooking oil such as chip pan fire (Class F), fires involving electrical equipment over 1000v, fires in enclosed spaces and fires involving flammable metals unless specialist dry powder is used.
