UFC commentator and podcast host Joe Rogan talked about boxing with his fellow comedian Dave Chappelle in an episode of the JRE. The two of them are friends and attended some boxing events together in the past. Chappelle wanted to know about Rogan’s fighting career in this particular episode.
Chappelle asked Joe about his time as a fighter. However, Rogan stated he doesn’t think about it all that much. Joe remembered that he always had much more power than others because of his body frame. Whenever Rogan faced anybody, he would fight with the intention of knocking them. Rogan once knocked out an opponent in a Taekwondo match, and it scared Joe to a certain extent and led to the decline of his Taekwondo career. “I thought he was dead,” said Rogan to Chappelle.
Joe Rogan also told Chappelle about the difficulty of staying in shape for fighters. Rogan used the example of Floyd Mayweather and Andre Berto and their physique to demonstrate his point. Mayweather likes to party but takes his training very seriously. The duo also talked about the mental strength and ferociousness that a fighter must have. Joe stated that it’s something that can be slowly trained, but most guys are born with it.
Chappelle also briefly spoke about his son getting into boxing and training under Justin Juco. He discussed his son’s first sparring session with an amateur contender. Dave’s son was able to hold his own but was overwhelmed. The trainer told Chappelle that his son does have a fighting will which was something you have to be born with.
Joe talks about Jake Paul’s career
YouTube sensation Jake Paul has made a name for himself as a professional boxer. He was largely known as a content creator before he started boxing. However, only a few fans and fighters recognize his success in the ring due to his unconventional approach to the sport.
Rogan commented about how Jake played it smart by boxing individuals with boxing experience. Nate Robinson was a former American professional basketball but not much of a fighter. Paul had superior boxing skills and knocked out Robinson in their bout.
Furthermore, Rogan discussed Paul’s bout with Ben Askren. Askren came off a hip replacement to fight Paul. He did not possess the boxing skills to compete with Paul and suffered a first-round knockout loss. The only professional boxer he fought remains Tommy Fury. Fury outclassed Paul in their bout and proved that the YouTube sensation may not have the pedigree to compete against high-level boxers.
