Research areas

My goal as an instructor is to help students develop critical thinking skills by making connections between concepts and drawing their own conclusions, rather than regurgitating facts. My teaching is evidence-based and culturally responsive, and I develop specific pedagogical strategies to promote flexibility, accessibility, cultural diversity, and higher-order thinking in my courses.

As a researcher, I am currently evaluating pedagogical interventions that contribute to the academic achievement of off-campus and working college students, who constitute a large proportion of the student body at UW. I am also interested in the mechanisms that regulate the onset and progression of sexual development in fishes, and how this knowledge can be used by the fishing and aquaculture industries to produce sustainable seafood.
