I've got an '87 60 that runs great but is rusty. Roof line, rear 1/4s, rear wheel arches, windows... you get the idea. I've got very little money in the thing and apparently no one wants to buy it, so I have decided to go ahead and make a flat bed out of it. This is not going to be a hard core truggy, but more a fun "cheap" way to revitalize an old 60 and keep me busy.

I have been reading through the builds here on mud trying to figure out what people do with the fuel tank, which looks like it is mounted to the body. I really liked this setup for the spare tire/fuel tank, but couldn't see too well what he had done there. I definitely want a much larger bed space as this will be replacing a Toyota pickup, but don't want things to look disproportionate. I'm debating just moving the rear section up to meet the windows, but I'm not sure I like the angled rear wall on a "pickup". Also thinking about trying to use the back section of a similar sized pickup cab so I could have a sliding glass window.

This will be slow-going.

Lets see some ideas.

Good idea, I have pictures of this one, but not a flatbed, just idea:

If done properly, you can have a decent rig. If not, you'll just be one of the thousands of bubba'd rigs out there..

It might turn out "bubba'd" in someones opinion, but I dont really care as long as I can load it with fire wood. It's not as if it's going to be worth any less than it is now. I don't intend to half-ass things, but I'm also not a bodyman, so we shall see how it turns out. I'm trying to decide whether or not to put a 1/4 window in. It would certainly be easier not to.

Has anyone done one of these and left the fuel tank in the stock position?

I really like the on with the diesel tank on the back. I'm not sure I like how pointy the cab looks when you move the rear section forward. I like the squared off truck look.

here are a couple of pics for you...

I think the 60 series body lines are harder to make look clean as a truck, but as you see in the first pic, when a genius does it, it can look OK...Having built the 55 in the second pic, my first advise would be to brace the interior vertically, horizontally, diagonally, front to back and inside out BEFORE the sawzawl comes out of the box...

the build thread for the 60 series is over on Pirate, the guys in stockton put it together.

also, respirators, cause breathing is a good thing

That side window treatment makes the truck. It looks really good. What guys in Stockton?

FC and Georg...Valley Hybrids

I'm familiar with Valley Hybrids, but not FC. I was in San Francisco last week and almost drove over to Stockton to see the shop, but didn't want to seem like a creeper, lol.

What about cuttin most of it out and doing a pop up camper ala Fourwheel campers? Sealed between cab and camper with the 60 sides?

I like that bed. Why do you guys get all of the good stuff?

Lambcrusher, that 55 is pretty much the exact look I'll be going for. What did you use to close in the rear of the cab? Pics? Lots of Pics?

The one on pirate is insanely cool, but just a wee bit above my skill level in the sheet metal department.... I'm thinking find a scrap cab and use most of the rear bulkhead from it. I just really like a flat rear bulkhead as opposed to an angled one. It gives more room for me to kick my seat back too. Lets see some more deets on that 55. Is there a build link?

Niffa that one is nicely done, but for me it would kind of defeat the purpose. I need something as functional as a pickup. Do you have any shots of the rear cab wall on that thing?

Very sweet niffa. I like the lower rear cab wall.
