After years of combing over MUD Classifieds, craigslist, marketplace, and whatever else... I finally commited to buying an FJ62. I have wanted one of these for years, and finally found the one for me. Pretty excited to get a few little things up to par, but overall its a clean cruiser and really doesn't need much work.

Pretty excited to find a California cruiser with virtually no rust what so ever. Its got a freshly rebuild 3F-E and is H-55F swapped with a Twin stick kit installed.
ARB Bumper, Roof Rack, Awning and Room sides. OME lift Springs, with anti-inversion shackles, 17" Tundra Steelies, and a myriad of other lighting upgrades and bolt-ons....

Started with a few small things, tried to get all power locks and power windows working, found a bad window motor and two back door lock actuators were aftermarket and bad, so I ordered some. I also found this really nice wiring so I soldered them up and put heat shrink on them.

I also saw some surface rust on a front brake caliper and the hubs, so I cleaned them and added a little paint to protect them from future rust and make it a little better to look at

I also found the tie rod ends were plugged and the boots looked really empty so I added zerks and greased them up.

got it on the lift and checked the diff oil and the transfer case, swapped out the front fill plug for a hex fill plug.

Then I took a day and drove about 2 hours for some fishing and the cruiser did great.

Pretty happy with how the H-55F helps the cruiser feel like it has a little power and definitely makes it easier to pull the big hills on the highway.

great looking rig. nice starting point. drive it and enjoy it!!
Thanks, yes, I am hoping to not do a lot of work at all and just drive it!!! that way I can take care of a few things on the FJ40.

So are you in MD or WV? I'm in MD and also have a 62. Mine was also originally a CA truck, unfortunately, it came to the east coast about 20 years ago so she has a decent amount of body rust, frame is solid. I also have an h55 which has been a pleasant surprise.

Oh nice, that’s awesome. Im sure it’s still in a lot better shape than the ones unfortunately being destroyed by rust around here. I’m in Hedgesville WV, about a 15min drive to Hagerstown, MD.

Great. Thanks @huminajumina, now you baited me into slumming in the 60 series threads!

Yesterday I adjusted the valves to try an quiet a few down and it worked like a champ, I followed some advice on this thread to keep the engine nice and hot and loosen everything as well as having all the tools out and ready. It worked great, except I couldn't figure out exactly what everyone was talking about as far as hooking up the bump start connector to the bottom connection of the cold start injector plug..... I also found out my bump start switch is bad, so that might have been the issue.

I also followed another thread on here to swap out the dim backlighting with LEDs... I had spare 174 bulbs laying around from putting them in my van, so that was free and easy, I also fixed the light for the cigarette lighter that didn't work...

Then I got a nice shot of the front with the Foglights off and the winch controller tucked into the bumper, as well as, maryland tags removed and WV (rear only) plates on.

Haha, thanks man, obviously cant help but dig in the forums and find some things to tinker with, but this rig is already pretty solid and doesn't really need any work, so I am excited to just put some miles on and enjoy it!

Alright, it happened. First major issue with the ‘new to me’ FJ62. I took the dog to the vet & when I went to leave the cruiser wouldn’t start. Cranked fine but wouldn’t fire. After several tries it fired up & ran stronng.

Tried to start it this morning & no such luck.
The battery is strong & cranks fine
Checked for spark & plenty of spark on the #3 CYL.
Checked the EFI,ENGINE,GUAGE fuses, all good.

Seems like it’s not getting fuel, and I’m leaning towards a bad fuel pump or EFI relay. I’ve followed along with a few threads…. No check engine light is present. I’ll have to dig in the FSM and confirm some things, some of the responses in these threads talk about checking the EFI relay & also jumping the diagnostic connector to see if I get fuel, so those will probably be my next steps…..

Here's a shot from the other day....

So I followed the FSM and went through the Troubleshooting guide, I checked all the pins on the MAF sensor (air meter) and it checks good. I checked out the EFI Relay and it checks good. I put the jumper in the diagnostic port and you can hear the fuel pump turn on when you turn on the key... but in lieu of a fuel pressure gauge, I cracked the fuel line going into the fuel filter, wrapped it in rags, and turned on the key a few times, and got absolutely no fuel pressure at the filter.

Its nice that landcruisers have drain plugs in the fuel tanks, I had a lot of gas in here, about 19 gallons x 6.7lbs per gallon, that was really nice to be able to drain it.

I went to the local auto parts store to get a new pump, but it is the wrong one, it looks more like an aftermarket 80 series fuel pump, needless to say, I got on cruiser teq and ordered a pump and some 40 parts....

I also scored a cheap used oem door actuator off of ebay, so thats nice.

hoping these parts come in later this week and I can get the new pump in.

Another day, another post, those parts showed up quick!!! Got a new fuel filter and the new Fuel pump with strainer from Cruiser Outfitters and they showed up today, so I got it all installed after dinner, and the cruiser fired right up. Now I have a set of FJ40 Taillights to install when I get a chance.

After getting the fuel pump in I noticed a few times it took longer to crank before the engine would fire...back to the FSM and MUD. I found a few threads talking about the cold start injector and also the Time delay switch so I figured I would investigate.... At first I was worried about a check valve in the fuel system since I replaced both the fuel pump and fuel filter, but quickly learned this was not the case. I took the multimeter to everything and checked the resistance of the Injector and the time delay relay and both checked out.... after a closer look I noticed this.

it was cracked when the PO recently Replaced the Alternator. After I checked it, I noticed it seemed better, so I must have wiggled it where it needed to go..... The new one is installed, we'll see in the morning if it works!!

Also if you notice the bolt on the Air Pump is not seated, the new alternator belt wasnt adjusted (it was loose and squealing) so all of this checks out....it was just a poor alternator job.

I had pulled the Cold Start injector to clean it as well, so here is a shot of that, ultimately I kept digging until I found the bad time delay switch.

She cleaned up well, I didn't do the Check from the FSM because I didn't want to bend the fuel line if I could help it, and didn't wanna dig out an old brake line with a banjo fitting from a bike project so I decided to skip that step until I absolutely needed to craft up a few Redneck SSTs.

Also when I bought a few axle fill plugs from Specter Off Road, I ended up getting the wrong parts in the mail so I sent them back and hopefully got them to the right customer, so they sent me this free Toyota beanie! Thanks Kay at SOR for the awesome gift and the parts showed up quick too!!! Such a great community!

After all the recent work, I took the Cruiser on a nice weekend trip up to a state park with the wife and even got in the river for a while.

Alright, I think the Cold start Injector relay did the trick, it seems to start like normal again now, I also found the BVSV on the other side of the thermostat housing was disconnected as well, so I reconnected it and tightened the Air pump bolts up, seems like this Alternator job is finally finished ;). I also replaced the twin stick boot with a new one to quiet things down inside the cab, the one from advanced adapters has survived the past 10 years or more in my 40 so I got a replacement from them.

Then Last night, after getting home from Thanksgiving dinner with family, I closed the driverside door and the side mirror glass fell out and shattered. I know power mirrors for the FJ62 are discontinued from Toyota, and these work, but they are just really loose and shake with the road vibration, So I got cheap knock-off pair from amazon to throw on for now or potentially cannibalize parts from if they are at all compatible.

Other than that, the Gas spout used to spit up fuel after you topped off the tank, and after I dropped it and went over everything during the fuel pump replacement, I seem to have fixed that which is nice!

Got the cheap knock off mirror mounted for now, going to keep and hopefully repair the OEM electric mirrors...

I stole the Pioneer 2 Din Navigation receiver out of my van and replaced the Cheap Sony that was in the Cruiser. It worked ok but really didn't sound great. I had seen the mess of wiring for the stereo when I had pulled the trim off the first time, so today I pulled off all the twisted knots of wiring and soldered together a harness using the factory connector and heat-shrink. I also added a small cheap amazon subwoofer under the passenger seat to add a little extra bass.

Here's the mess I had to clean up, I only cut one finger with a razor blade so I'd call it a mild success!
IMG_9734.JPG

The Adapter harness was like $6 on amazon and it only took me about an hour to cut the old Van harness off and solder the two together
IMG_9737.JPG

This Pioneer unit has GPS and a Nav database for times when out in the wilderness, but also has Apple CarPlay for the convenience and features that the old Sony had, but it just sounds a hell of a lot better, so I am very happy with the afternoon of work.
IMG_9741.JPG

I added the small powered sub under the passenger seat and I dug out the Rear heater fan harness so I can install the rear heater switch I ordered from Cruiser Cult. I am planning to make an extension harness to run the switch up to the dash.

Other than that the cruiser has been running strong, Oh and I got a Factory looking reproduction shift knob here's a picture and it has the old stereo in the background.

IMG_9718.JPG

I got a used rear heater switch from @Cruiser Cult & finally got sone rear heat. I need to troubleshoot the low heat not working, but haven’t had the time to dig into it lately.
