This DIY Mess Free Puffy Paint recipe is so easy, your kids could practically make it on their own. If you’re a crafting household then you may already have most of the supplies on hand. It requires only two ingredients and less than five minutes to make! The best part is that it’s washable, so you don’t have to worry about a mess.
I love finding new and fun DIY crafts for my son and me to do together during the summer. My son loves to paint and is very creative, so I thought we’d try a variation of finger painting that doesn’t require a messy cleanup. This DIY Mess Free Puffy Paint Recipe uses only a few ingredients and some Zip Lock bags. The best part is that you don’t need bowls, paintbrushes, or forks to mix it; you just add the ingredients to a bag and smush together with your hands!
While being creative and getting messy is sometimes part of the fun, I love my version of DIY Mess Free Puffy Paint because you can still be creative and avoid the mess if you want.
Gather you supplies and a few Zip Lock bags and lets get to work!

DIY Mess Free Puffy Paint
What You Need to Make the Puffy Paint
1/4 cup Shaving Cream (I used Gillet Foamy Regular)
2 tbsp. Elmer’s Glue (or something similar)
Gallon Ziploc Bags ( or bags with zip closure)
Scissors
Additional Supplies for the Puffy Paint Ice Cream Cone
White Drawing Paper
Pencil
Sprinkles (optional)
Rice (optional)
Make Your Own DIY Mess Free Puffy Paint
Start by adding about a 1/4 cup of shaving cream to a gallon size Ziploc bag.
Next, add about 2 tablespoons of glue and 4-5 drop of food coloring.
Then, seal the bag and begin to mix by mushing it together with yours hand for about 1-2 minutes.
Cut off the corner of the bag and apply paint to paper.
Allow to dry for a few hours!
Make a Puffy Pain Ice Cream Cone
Follow the instructions above to make your favorite ice cream flavors.
Using brown construction paper, draw and cut out a cone shape. Decorate it however you want.
Glue the cone to white drawing paper (or whatever color you’d like). We used white so the colors would pop!
Apply your puffy paint on top of the cone- adding 1, 2, or even 3 scoops.
Decorate your ice crem with pom poms, real sprinkles, or chocolate chips. My son’s favorite ice cream flavor is mint chocolate chip so I colored some rice with brown food coloring and he sprinkled them on his mint green puffy paint- along with a pom pom cherry of course!
This is a great craft to do with small kids and even large groups of kids.
Adding and mixing the shaving cream and glue in bags is a lot less messy than mixing it up in bowls. There’s less spilling, less clean up, and I’ve found that the urge to stick their fingers in it is way less. Combining the ingredients this way is also a fun sensory activity. You can use popsicle sticks to smear the paint around or brushes if you so desire!
