Trinidad-Ivy City Garden Club Events

P1010118
Join Garden Club members this Sunday, May 4th starting at 9am [latecomers begrudgingly welcomed] at the intersection of Montello and Morse. Well be cleaning up our treeboxes and doing a general clean-up of the area, as well as discussing planting plans. Attendees are asked to bring a bottle of water that they will be able to refill, relevant tools [rakes, brooms, shovels, clippers, perhaps a saw, or two, ect.], gloves [some will be provided], and any spare trashbags you have lying about. I'd also suggest bring a few bucks in case anyone makes a coffee run to SOVA.
P1010157
Then we'll do an actual planting the next Sunday, May 11th. Not sure on the time yet for that one, but the location is the same.

P1010127
Children are welcome.

FBI and MPD Make Key Arrests in Northeast DC Drug Ring

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier, Federal Bureau of Investigation Assistant Director in Charge (ADIC) of the Washington Field Office, Joseph Persichini, and US Attorney Jeffrey A. Taylor announced today the arrests and indictment of five individuals in connection with an ongoing investigation of a drug ring operating in Langston Terrace in Northeast, DC.

A 38-count federal indictment was unsealed today, charging eight individuals with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute more than one kilogram of heroin. The arrests were a result of an operation by members of the FBI/MPD Safe Streets Task Force. Authorities believe the ring was led by Rex Pelote, Sr.

Today, Charles Edward McRae, along with Linda M. Jones, were arrested, in the District of Columbia. Each are members of the Rex Pelote, Sr., crew. Previous arrests consisted of Loretta Belt on April 7, 2008 and Edward Tyrone Farley on April 15, 2008.

During the arrests and execution of the search warrants, authorities seized more than 200 grams of heroin, more than 300 grams of crack cocaine, and one firearm.

“If you’re a resident in that community you would be concerned about a daily operation of any quantity,” Chief Lanier said. She said the investigation into Langston Terrace began after a spate of violence in 2006. Chief Lanier called the take down in Langston Terrace significant.

“Today’s announcement of the indictments, arrests and searches relating to members of the Langston Terrace Crew illustrates the success of the Team DC concept wherein the FBI and MPD share resources, personnel and intelligence to address violent crime issues in the District of Columbia,” ADIC Persichini said. “The FBI will continue to participate in this joint law enforcement effort to make the streets of the District of Columbia safer for its citizens.”

Mayor Fenty also praised the efforts of Team DC and said, “I’m pleased that many of the arrests occurred in the Fifth District, an area that has experienced a critical amount of violence.”

US Attorney Taylor stated, “Today is a good day for Langston Terrace. We want to bring some justice and peace back to our communities.”

Wine Tasting SOVA

Here's a bit of info provided by SOVA on tomorrow's tasting and performance [edited and with additons]-

The wine tasting is from 5:30pm - 7pm. It's $20 and includes the tasting of wines from the Ascheri Winery in the Piedmont region of Italy, as well as cheese, crackers, fruit, and the like.

Here's more information about the winery and wines at the tasting.

About Ascheri

The Ascheri family has been making wine in Italy's Piedmontsince the beginning of the 19th century. A locality with the family name stillexists in the township of La Morra, marking thespot of their original vineyard holdings. In 1880, the Ascheris moved theirwine cellar to the town of Bra,near Alba. This town offered fine road connections to the city of Turin, the principalmarket for their wines. The production of our grapes and, consequently, of ourwines is carried out on three different estates: two planted with indigenousvines located in the heart of the Barolo region and the third planted withnon-traditional grapes in the Roero area.

The Wines

Langhe Arneis – Very pale gold color, this ultraattractive alternative to Pinot Grigio shows a fairly intense bundle of apple, honeydew, wildflower and flinty notes. In the mouth the wine shows good weightwith very lively flavors of white-fleshed fruits and spice. On the long finish,a touch of pink grapefruit and almond tones and nicely intermingled with hintsof anise.

Dolcetto d’Alba – Ruby red in color withviolet nuances, this Dolcetto shows a bouquet of blackberry, blackcurrant andcherry followed by round, harmonious fruit on the palate. A typical Dolcettowith mild tannins, this wine complements charcuterie, roast chicken and grilledmeats.

Nebbiolo d’Alba – From the Bricco San Giacomovineyard, this traditional 100% Nebbiolo is ruby red with garnet nuances and anelegant bouquet with hints of velvety violet and spicy notes. On the palate, the wine is remarkably persistent, yet soft, with flavors of rich cherryunderlying a mineral earthiness.

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE

It begins at 8pm and there is a five dollar cover charge. The performer's name is Jake Armerding. The $5 goes to the musician, and SOVA, will, of course, have the bar open.

Here's information about Jake.

Who is Jake Armerding, you ask? According to Boston Globe, Armerding is 'the most gifted and promising songwriter to emerge from the Boston folk scene in years.'

Cleveland Country Magazine states, 'Armerding straddles a curious fine line between 'new folk' singer/songwriter, contemporary bluegrass, and a 'swinging' country-pop style that appears wholly organic both in its approach and execution.'

And per The Washington Post, 'his instrumental fiddle skills are remarkable.'

But don't just take our word about this impressive artist...come out and see for yourself at SOVA! Cover is $5.

Meeting Announcement

The second meeting of the prospective Capitol Hill North Neighborhood Association (CHNNA) will be held on May 17th from 10am – noon at Gallaudet University (please note the rescheduled date). We hope to distribute flyers this weekend that will provide more details. The agenda for the upcoming meeting includes:

* A review of the results from the surveys that were handed out at the initial meeting
* Recommendations of the Boundary Committee and the Naming Committee
* A summary of the updated Bylaws and Articles of Incorporation
* A discussion of the elections process and the identification of potential nominees
* And more…

Please come join us – we look forward to another great turnout.

A Quick Reminder

Many of you have read a few recent comments from me expressing concern about the tone some comment trails have taken over the past month, or so. Essentially, I started the blog because I was interested in neighborhood affairs. Over time people began to read it because it became, both through the posts, and the comments, a decent source of info on a neighborhood that was somewhat lacking in online presence. Historically the comments have mostly been helpful in that they have been people discussing neighborhood affairs and ways to build community [some of which have certainly been realized outside the online world]. I know that we, as a community, sometimes confront difficult issues, and race relations can be one of those.

My suggestion is not that we self censor, or avoid difficult issues, but rather that people take a breath and think before posting. Because most of the people posting here live in the community it is important to remember that the person you attack, or the people reading that attack, may be the woman next door, or the guys who helped you dig out your car after the last snow storm. Bottom line, be nice. Be sensitive. We all chose to live here, so we probably all have a lot more in common, than we have that divides us. Just, please, keep that in mind.

Youth Garden Announcement

I don't have the forms. Reposting-

GFGT combined forms
Howdy folks,

This is just a quick update to everyone who may be interested in the Washington Youth Garden summer family program on Saturdays. It had been scheduled to start this Saturday, May 3rd, but if we do not have several more families sign up by tomorrow, we will be notifying participants that the program will be delayed until we can obtain a larger group to work with. We’ve asked for $10 to reserve a plot of land, and in return, we provide all the seeds, fertilizer, and cooking and gardening instruction completely free. If you had planned on showing up Saturday, but had not yet let us know, we must know by tomorrow or the program will be postponed until further notice. We’re just getting the word out so there won’t be people showing up Saturday thinking there will be a program if we have to postpone the start date. Help spread the word! It’s a uniquely wonderful opportunity. Again, information and forms are attached.

Kind regards,

Heather Myers

The other side of the Joseph Cole Recreation Center, which though inviting to children, adults, and dogs alike during the day, often becomes a haven for less savory activity late at night.

The Post reports on police response following recent night of shootings across the District. Two paragraphs of note:

The stepped-up enforcement plan would include many of the strategies already being used in Northeast, Groomes said. "We've been doing sweeps against public disorder and drinking in public. We've been doing gun recovery. We've increased traffic enforcement. We've been knocking on doors of those on parole and those associated with gangs."

The main difference, she added, is that police will broaden those efforts through the city. "After last night, we realize that we don't know where it could hit next anymore. So we've got to expand this Districtwide."

IMG_0289
An old shot of the location where the man's body was found.
I've been told that the 30 year old man shot at Joe Cole did not reside in the neighborhood, but lived elsewhere in the District. He regularly spent time at the Rec center after he got off work. He was employed by the District government.

Councilmember Thomas' office is aware of the demand for greater light surrounding Joe Cole, and engaged in discussions of the matter with representatives from relevant agencies yesterday. So hopefully we'll see some better lighting soon. In this way this man's tragic killing might still yield some positive effect in that it could deter future violence on the site. At a meeting a few weeks ago with administrators and architects working on Wheatley I stressed the importance of heavy lighting around the school with a particular focus on the rear of the grounds as the face Joe Cole.

IMG_4347
A coke spoon? Found in the valley between Joseph Cole and Wheatley Elementary, which is undergoing a long awaited renovation before it reopens.

It is not unusual to see liquor bottles or drug paraphernalia on the site.

This photo shows one of Wheatley's buildings and how close it sits to Joe Cole.

IMG_2830
The 1960s building above has been demolished and will be replaced, but note that portions of Wheatley sit on higher ground than that of the Rec. The wall visible here grows in height as the space between the two sites descends into an inclined alley that empties out onto Morse, Trinidad, and Neal.

The building shown above is on the southeast corner of the intersection [directly across from the rec]. When I walked by the building this morning there were piece of crime scene tape lying on the ground. Apparently the man was found lying on the grounds of the Rec near the phone box. Draft Minutes ANC5B 4/3 Public Mtg

Public Meeting
Washington Center for Aging Services
2601 18th Street, NE

Minutes April 3, 2008

I. CALL TO ORDER…………………………………..Chairperson William C. Shelton

II. DETERMINATION OF A QUORUM………………………Recording Secretary
Elise Bernard
Commissioners Present: Shelton [01], Brown-Daniels [02], Chandler [03], Woodland [04], Davis [05], Bernard [08], Manning [9], Henderson [10].

Commissioners Absent: Lawson [06], Hooper [07], Myers [11], Paul [12]
8/12 commissioners present.
Finding of Quorum made by Secretary Bernard
Seconded by Commissioner Henderson

III. ANNOUNCEMENT
Commissioner Shelton announced that Commissioner Paul [12] will be resigning effective next week.

IV. GUEST SPEAKERS/COMMUNITY MINUTE
a. Vicky Burrier, R.N. and Chris Collins, R.N. on behalf of the International
Dialysis Center
i. The two women have roughly 25 years of experience each as registered
nurses. The Center is owned and operated by doctors and nurses. They have a Certificate of Need on file for 1730 Hamlin Street, NE. They recently [2 weeks ago] entered into a lease on this same property. The Center will be open 6 days a week from either 6am-6pm, or maybe 9pm. The capacity would be 100 patients a day, or more to the extent that the Center offers training for home self-care. It will be a 24 station facility featuring all new equipment, and a parking lot to accommodate patrons. They are planning for some patrons to use a pick-up van, so not all patients will drive. The lot will be secure and most patients will visit during the day.
ii. At this point in the meeting it became clear that 1730 Hamlin Street was
also the address on a letter circulated to the commissioners just prior to the meeting regarding the possible taking of the property by eminent domain. The Center had been made aware of the situation only 24 hours prior to this meeting. The letter was circulated, and written, by the property owner, a Mr. Guang Jing Li, who had also sent copies to various city agencies. It was unclear how far the process may have progressed. The property owner’s real estate agent also spoke, assuring all that he had not been aware of the Center’s lease, and had clean hands in the matter. Commissioner Woodland also spoke briefly on the matter and discussion ensued. Apparently the proposed city use of 1730 Hamlin Street is a new fire station. A fire station currently exists in close proximity tto this location, and the idea is that it would be relocated and rebuilt because the current station is in disrepair. The matter was tabled due to the unclear status of the property.
b. Aleizha Batson and other representatives [including contractors] spoke on
behalf of the Washington Area Sewer Authority [WASA]
i. This project is related to DC’s combined sewer overflow system. It
involves the design of a massive underground tunnel reservoir to accommodate the sewer overflow. This is a very long-term project, that is moving into phase 1. Construction will not start until 2012, and is projected to continue until 2025. At this time the project involves the taking of test borings. Such borings, although they will be deep, will involve small surface cuts and minimal disruptions to traffic. Some locations for the borings are Florida and Benning Road, and Holbrook and Queen. The anticipated cost for the entire project is 1.3 billion dollars. This is required pursuant to an EPA mandate and DC and the federal government will share the bill. The plan calls for everything to continue to run through the current Blue Plains treatment facility, which can handle 370 gallons of waste a day. Public rate meetings will be held June 11th 6:30pm-8:30pm and June 23rd 10am-12pm. The chosen contractor has gained experience on multiple projects of this type as other cities move towards compliance.
c. Mr. Hall, a resident of Ward 5 asked why the Councilmember’s office isn’t
dealing with issues that have been around since Vincent Orange held the office.
d. A barbershop owner from Bladensburg and Douglas appeared to seek ANC support for his parking plan and also mentioned that he wants to add residential units upstairs. No information was presented on the zoning of the property. The matter was tabled until more information could be obtained and the gentleman was told to speak with his local commissioner regarding community input on the matter.
VI. PUBLIC SAFETY REPORT
a. No officer was present to deliver the public safety report.

VII. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES
a. Motion by Commissioner Davis
b. Seconded by Commissioner Brown-Daniels
c. Motion passed. 8 commissioners in favor and none opposed.
VIII. MEETING ADJOURNED AT 9:17pm
a. Motion to adjourn by Commissioner Shelton
b. Seconded by Commissioner Woodland
c. Motion passed. 8 commissioners in favor and none opposed.

Man, 72, Stabbed in 1500 Blk of Isherwood

ABC News 7 reports on the stabbing of a disabled elderly man in his home yesterday. Police had not yet identified a motive in the killing, but noted that the house had been ransacked. James Germany was the father of five children, at least one of whom was a teenager who returned home from cheerleading practice to the sight of police cars already on the scene. His wife discoved his body on the floor near his bed. He had been stabbed multiple times. Apparently Mr. Germany, who had trouble walking, was in the habit of leaving the front door to his apartment building slightly ajar. This is located in the Rosedale neighborhood, just south of Benning Road.

The Last Days of Judas Iscariot

I was lucky enough to catch last night's production of this play, which continues at the H Street Playhouse through May 2nd. For those who haven't seen it, I would strongly suggest checking it out. It was very good. There were many points at which members of the audience laughed out loud. The script was well written, and the acting was solid. Although the play, at 2 hours and 45 minutes, sounds rather long, it never drags. The production, though it deals with a religious subject, is certainly not confined to those with an interest in the area. The real order of business here is entertainment, but they manage to touch on many issues during the 2 plus hours. Purgatory becomes a town, which not only boasts residents, and the normal attractions, but that can be visited by residents of both Heaven and Hell [and occasionally Earth] when business calls. Satan makes an appearance, as does Mother Teresa, and a most memorable Saint Monica. A handful of apostles also recall Judas, and his mother recounts incidents from his youth when the prosecutor invokes Judas' juvenile misdeeds.
In this proceeding, however, Judas is hardly the only one on trial. In the end the play presents the questions of how culpable each of us is for his own deeds, how much those deeds are impacted by forces we cannot control, and how time can change us. Likely to be of interest to observers, or actors in, the criminal justice system, or the juvenile system, or anyone pondering such questions generally.

Joy is an internationally touring comic, and just returned from London where she performed on the TV Show 'The World Stands Up', which airs in over 15 countries. In 2007 she was selected to host 'The Best of the Fest' at the prestigious Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, Canada. Joy has made several guest appearances on various COMEDY CENTRAL shows and in movies, including, NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE and the upcoming FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL. She has performed on THE LATE LATE SHOW, with Wayne Brady Live in Las Vegas, and was the star of her own TV series on the Oxygen Network called "GOOD GIRLS DON'T" produced by Carsey-Werner (Rosanne, That 70's Show) The daughter of a Catholic nun and a Catholic monk (yes, it's true) Joy was raised in Austin, Texas and lives in Los Angeles.

Erin Jackson

Equal parts sarcasm and insightful commentary, Erin's laid-back style quickly made her a crowd favorite in the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore metropolitan areas. Erin has appeared on The Bob and Tom Radio Show, and will be appearing on the upcoming season of Comedy Central's Live at Gotham. Erin is currently peddling her comedic wares at clubs and colleges all around the country, and while she's in no rush to achieve celebrity status, she is looking forward to the day when she becomes famous enough to move to Hollywood, buy a mansion and marry a White woman -the ultimate symbol of success for Black celebrities.

Aparna Nancherla

Aparna Nancherla has an intimidating name, but don't be scared! In fact, she's quite approachable onstage, from a heckler's perspective. A philosophy major might say, "Aparna tells semi-absurdist joke-type word bunchings." To which Aparna would reply, "Totally." She delights in exploring life's ho-hum situations - while wearing awkward glasses. Aparna was recently selected to feature at the 2008 NACA convention and to join the 2008 Stand Up for Diversity College Tour. She has also performed at venues including the Highlands nightclub in Hollywood for the 2007 NBC Stand Up for Diversity Showcase; the Hollywood Improv; the Laffhole at Chop Suey and the Comedy Underground in Seattle; the Comedy Cabaret in New Jersey; Chicks and Giggles at Mo Pitkins in New York City; the DC Improv; and as part of the DC Comedy Fest.

Diana Saez

Diana Saez is a comedian performing regularly in the New York City area. She was recently featured in the Washington Post, the Washington City Paper, and the Washingtonian for her role in creating, producing, and performing in one of Washington DC's first all-female comedy showcases. She has been heard on XM Radio and has performed at the DC Improv and the DC Comedy Festival.

Andrea Fuller

Perhaps the oldest, shortest and whitest comic on the DC scene, Andrea Fuller has been enchanting audiences for fifteen years with her unique brand of inappropriate humor. A Canadian by birth, Andrea began her comedy career in New Orleans, Louisiana and honed her stand-up and improv skills in the clubs of Austin, Texas and Washington, DC. A Capitol Hill mother of one, she is just thrilled to be out with adults for the evening in a location that does not have placemats that you can color on.

NBC4: Woman Found in Alley

Watch the video report. Apparently the woman's body found in an alley in the 1600 block of Montello was partially clothed. It appears she may have been engaged in prostitution. Her mother is interviewed in the video. The deceased woman was the 38 year old mother of 11 children. ANC Commissioner Rosetta Davis is also briefly interviewed. This is not being reported as a sex crime, but solely as a very brutal murder [the victim was beaten beyond recognition]. Video link is now working.

All Hell Has Apparently Broken Loose

I have no idea what is going on this week, but there has apparently been ANOTHER HOMICIDE in Trinidad. This one at Owen and Montello. In fact, much of the 5th District seems to have experienced a major spike in the past week. Looking at a recent PSA 504 crime report there were something like 5 stolen cars and thefts from auto, two robberies, and an assault in less than a week. For those not familiar, that is HUGE spike. Typically the crime report looks more like Theft from Auto, Theft from Auto, Burglary. And then there were these murders and shootings...

As all of you, I am concerned about the rise of violent crime in the past week. I wanted to inform you of some steps we have taken to address this problem. First, over the past several weeks, Commander Greene has used overtime to place additional officers in the neighborhoods that have seen the rise in violence. Also, I have directed many of our specialized units, such as drug units and gun units to work in the Fifth District. Just this past week, I have deployed hundreds of extra officers that were mobilized for the many events in the City to the Fifth District for High Visibility patrol.

We are aware of the issue and are working hard to seek out those involved and put a stop to the violence.

You have my commitment that we will use every resource available to address this issue. Meanwhile, please continue to assist as the eyes and ears of this community. Should you need an officer dispatched to an area to respond to suspicious activity, do not hesitate to dial 9-1-1.

Cathy L. Lanier, Chief of Police

So, if you live in 504 you might want to consider checking out Saturday's PSA [Police Service Area] meeting, which promises to have a large attendance. The meeting will be from 10am-11:30am. The location is the Youth Services Center at 1000 Mount Olivet Road.

Here's a rather longish short film, It's A Wonderful City, from the Beverly Hills Planning Department. Essentially it's It's A Wonderful Life redone to show the importance of zoning and planning review. Perhaps, in addition to you guys, some people from BZA might want to check it out. Via Cyburbia.

WP: The Last Days of Judas Iscariot

P1010015_4
The Washington Post gushes over Forum Theater's production of the Last Day's of Judas Iscariot at the H Street Playhouse. The review is liberally dosed with words and phrases like “exhilarating,” “preposterously entertaining.” The reviewer describes the production as “a literate cartoon, transforming familiar biblical figures into modern street-corner caricatures -- hustlers and gangbangers.” Honestly, check out the appraisal for yourself, it's well worth the read.
The author also has some very kind words for the theater, describing it as “funky, comfortable,” and “one of the city's best venues for serious theater.” The H Street Playhouse is located at 1365 H Street. Walking Tours of Interest

IMG_4403_2
The crowd for last year's Walking Town DC Florida Market tour.

I'm skipping out on following/leading tours this time due to finals, but that doesn't mean you should miss out. I've compiled a list of tours that seem particularly of interest to me and residents of this neighborhood. Within the list I've highlighted [in blue] the onces that sound most tempting.

Explore Florida Market/Capital City Market

Saturday 9 - 11 am
Meet outside
New York Avenue Metro station (Florida Avenue exit)
Ends at Litteri’s Italian Deli,
517 Morse Street, NE
The Florida Market is the city’s major wholesale food distribution center. The tour will stop at restaurants and vendors that sell to retail customers, including the DC Farmers Market building, and address development issues such as increased demand for urban living. Led by Richard Layman and presented by Citizens Planning Coalition, Frozen Tropics weblog, and Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space weblog.

Capitol Hill
Saturday 10 am - 12 noon
Meet outside
Eastern Market Metro station
End at Eastern Market, Seventh Street and North Carolina Avenue, SE
Reservations required: 202-661-7581 or
[email protected]
Most people think of Capitol Hill as a place of business, law, and politics. But “the Hill” is much more. Dating to the 18th century, the neighborhood is home to the historic Marine Corps Barracks, an alley that once housed more than 100 people, a Gothic Revival church, and Eastern Market. Led by Dwane Starlin and presented by Cultural Tourism DC and Washington Walks.

Alley Living in Capitol Hill
Saturday 12 noon - 2:30 pm
Meet at the northeast corner of
Third Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, SE (next to the SunTrust Bank), three blocks from the Capitol South Metro station
End at Gessford Court, SE, near Eastern Market
Alleys were used for stabling horses, industry, and housing the poor in the 1800s and early 1900s. Housing reform, zoning regulations, and urban renewal made most of these uses illegal. Visit Capitol Hill alleys and one of the city’s only remaining hitching posts. Led by Richard Layman and presented by Alley Residents of Washington, Citizens Planning Coalition, and Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space weblog.

Capitol Hill

Saturday 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Eastern Market Metro station
End at Eastern Market, Seventh Street and North Carolina Avenue, SE
Reservations required: 202-661-7581 or [email protected]

Eckington - 100 Years of Capital Traction

Saturday 1 - 2:30 pm
Meet outside
New York Avenue Metro station (Florida Avenue exit) in front of the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms Headquarters, corner of N and Second Streets, NE
End at
Rhode Island Avenue Metro station
Once a tranquil country estate, this neighborhood tells the story of Washington’s first electric streetcar and maps the expansion of the city along the well-worn tracks of the Metropolitan Branch of the B&O Railroad. Led by Brian Kraft and presented by the DC Preservation League and the Eckington Civic Association.

From the Beatles to XM Radio, the Evolution of NoMa (North of Massachusetts Avenue)
Saturday 2 - 3:30 pm
Meet and end at the
New York Avenue Metro station (M Street exit)
This up-and-coming neighborhood just north of Union Station is home to landmarks such as the Washington Coliseum, site of the Beatles first US concert in 1967. The New York Avenue Metro station opened in 2004, igniting the pace of development in NoMa, and with lead anchors like XM Radio; US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms; and NPR, a new mixed-use neighborhood is taking shape. Led and presented by Elizabeth Price, president, NoMa Business Improvement District.

Capitol Hill and the Landmark Eastern Market
Sunday 10 - 11:30 am
Meet at
Eastern Market Metro station plaza (east side toward Eighth Street)
End at
Eastern Market, Seventh and C Streets, SE
Trace the evolution of the 135-year-old Eastern Market from the Navy Yard to its present location, a Victorian-style masterpiece designed by political radical and architect Adolph Cluss. Hear stories about market culture and how, despite a ravaging fire in 2007, local efforts have persisted in maintaining this vital neighborhood hub, where shoppers are greeted by the familiar faces of generations of vendors. Led by Carole Kolker and presented by Cultural Tourism DC. Special thanks to the Capitol Hill Restoration Society, the Flea Market at Eastern Market, and the Capitol Hill Community Foundation.

H Street NE Alley Tour
Sunday 10 am - 12:30 pm

New York Avenue Metro station (south exit at M Street, NE)
End at the

The tour includes a stop at two occupied alley dwellings. Led by Richard Layman and presented by Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space blog, Frozen Tropics blog, and the Citizens Planning Coalition.

Gallaudet University Campus Tour
Sunday 11 am - 12:30 pm

Washingtonian's Chat With Joe Englert

Read the transcript here.

WP: Metro Seeking More Ticketing Power

I wanted to make sure people saw this Post story on the request from Metro for expanded ticking for its officers. Under Metro's proposal its officers would have the authority to ticket drivers who park in Metro bus stops. As many of you know, this is a huge problem on H Street and it often causes congestion. The other day I caught the bus and a large tow truck was parked in the bus stop slot. A second car was double parked on the other side of the Metro bus. A move like this is very important for now, and also extremely important to take in preparation for a streetcar.

Meeting Tonight

What: Trinidad Brainstorm/Strategy Group Meeting
When: 7-8:30 pm Thursday April 10, 2008
Street: 1310 Childress St., NE

This is a meeting of the group that's been focusing on public safety and other issues in PSA 504. Sorry for the short notice. I've gotten lots of email the last couple of days.

A Visit to XII Restaurant and Lounge

I recently visited XII and I think it's going to a nice addition to H Street. As a larger lounge space XII provides something not yet available on H. The menu is classic American food at reasonable prices. I had just had dinner, so I didn't try the food, but my friend ate some chicken tenders, and he found them very tasty.
The space was well put together and the upstairs is indeed a lounge area. By which I mean the space is occupied by a bar, numerous small tables with stools, three couches, and a circular booth in the corner. The couches and the booth constitute the VIP areas. I visited with a friend on Tuesday evening and I think we were two of maybe six people in the entire place, so I had a very good view of the entire space. Because much of the upstairs in windows you can get a great view of H Street, but the space is large enough that you don't get the feeling people on the street are watching you.
The capacity is around 300 people. For comparison the Rock and Roll Hotel has a capacity of 400 people. So XII is in a very large space for H Street, but it isn't huge compared to other places in the city.
I was also able to speak to the owner briefly, and he talked a bit about his plans for the business. The business is likely to appeal primarily to those in the 30 and over age range. Plans are in the works to have a sidewalk cafe on the side, and a rooftop deck, both of which should be very popular in warm weather.
Unfortunately I did not have my camera handy, so I didn't get any photos. If you have decent photos of the inside of XII feel free to send them my way.
XII Restaurant and Lounge is located at 1123 H Street.

A Note About ANM

I stopped by H Street's newest convenience and deli earlier today for a sandwich [the tuna, which was quite good and 4 dollars], and I was surprised to see that they also sell bags of injera [the Ethiopian bread]. ANM is located at 1363 H Street. Stop by and check them out if you haven't been by. They have lots of basics and they also feature a wide selection of ice cream novelties. The early morning / late night hours also make ANM an attractive option.

Twelve Gets Liquor License

IMG_5165
I'm told that Twelve, which is located in 1100 block of H Street, now has their liquor license. The restaurant and lounge was open and serving a full menu before obtaining its license. I'm not normally one to make recommendations here, and maybe it's just me, but the flashing open sign just seems a bit out of place.

UPDATE
======================================
I've since been able to visit XII and I think it will be a nice contribution to H Street. The menu is classic American food at reasonable prices.
And the open sign is indeed simply a holdover from the days of Cluck-U.
