For just the second time in World Cup history, two brothers faced each other in a game. Germany’s Jérôme Boateng and Ghana’s Kevin-Prince Boateng were both born in Berlin, to a Ghanaian father. Kevin-Prince, two years older than Jérôme, grew up playing for German clubs and the German youth national teams. In 2009, Kevin-Prince Boateng decided to play on the senior level for Ghana, saying at the time that he didn’t believe he would have a chance playing for the German national team.
In Fortaleza, the two brothers embraced before facing off in the second game of Group D, and they didn’t do each other any favors on the pitch.
The two brothers played each other four years ago in South Africa. Germany beat Ghana 1-0, but both teams advanced from the group stage.
Both brothers went to the bench before the end of Saturday’s game, which ended 2-2.
