It was named in honor of General William Campbell, one of the heroes of the Battle of King's Mountain (1780). Its boundaries were the same as today, except along the northeastern line. In 1845 the northeastern portion of Campbell was cut off to form part of Appomattox County, and in 1848 a small adjustment of this same border saw additional territory transferred to Appomattox's jurisdiction. Campbell county's creation represented geographers often refer to as a "second-order" formation. The earliest population to the area dates from the 1740s, when a group of Presbyterians from Pennsylvania migrated to the region. they were later joined by significant numbers of Quakers. By the end of the Revolution, this group and subsequent settlers in this corner of Bedford County were sufficient in number to petition for their own county, complaining of the great distance to quarterly court and inconvenience of conducting official business.

For a better understanding of county boundary changes, see our new section Virginia in Maps
Iberian also has hundreds of titles in e book (PDF) format!! Click here for a complete online catalog of available titles
CAMPBELL CO., VA 1810 CENSUS transcribed by John Vogt. 2013, 10 1/2 x 8 1/2, x, 29 pages, illustrations, map, full name index.
