“Unmissable . . . Bloodline’s tense politics, vivid new characters, and perfectly characterized Leia make it feel as central to the Star Wars universe as one of the films.”—Tordotcom
WITNESS THE BIRTH OF THE RESISTANCE
When the Rebellion defeated the Empire in the skies above Endor, Leia Organa believed it was the beginning to a lasting peace. But after decades of vicious infighting and partisan gridlock in the New Republic Senate, that hope seems like a distant memory.
Now a respected senator, Leia must grapple with the dangers that threaten to cripple the fledgling democracy—from both within and without. Underworld kingpins, treacherous politicians, and Imperial loyalists are sowing chaos in the galaxy. Desperate to take action, senators are calling for the election of a First Senator. It is their hope that this influential post will bring strong leadership to a divided galaxy.
As the daughter of Darth Vader, Leia faces with distrust the prospect of any one person holding such a powerful position—even when supporters suggest Leia herself for the job. But a new enemy may make this path Leia’s only option. For at the edges of the galaxy, a mysterious threat is growing. . . .
Praise for Bloodline
“[Claudia] Gray paints a much more complete galaxy than we often get to see on the big screen. . . . Knowing that Rian Johnson (writer, director of Star Wars: Episode VIII) had some creative input on the novel provides hope that we haven’t seen the last of all of these wonderful characters. . . . Star Wars: Bloodline isn’t just a great Star Wars book, or a great Leia book, or a great book; it’s a great introduction into the larger world of Star Wars in general.”—ComicBookdotcom
“Bloodline is a nonstop page-turner that grabs at heartstrings that you weren’t aware of and yanks down on every one of them. The story is loaded with context for The Force Awakens that plants the seeds for The First Order in perfectly haunting ways, and leaves the reader grasping for more details on newly discovered favorite characters.”—Inverse

Varish came loping toward them now on all fours. “There you are! I was worried you’d be late.”
“We’re still early,” Leia protested as both she and Tai-Lin were wrapped in quick, long-limbed hugs.
“Yes, but I worry. You know how they get.”
“They” meant prominent representatives of both the far-left and far-right branches of the Populist faction. The far-right branches wanted to dissolve the Senate so each world would again become a totally separate entity; the far left hoped to open voting to the general populace, so that instead of thousands of senators refusing to agree, they could have countless citizens refusing to agree. The only thing these senators had in common was, it seemed, a willingness to support Leia’s candidacy for First Senator.
“Now come along and be introduced to everyone,” Varish insisted. Soon Leia found herself shaking hands and paws, murmuring greetings; thanks to some review holos Korrie had prepared for her, she recognized each senator in attendance and could even ask a few pertinent questions about their families and worlds.
In other words, Leia thought as she listened to someone cheerfully talk about his grandchildren, this is going wonderfully for everyone but me. Though not until now had she realized how much she dreaded her candidacy—or maybe just discussing her candidacy—whatever it was that made her so ill at ease.
They entered the banquet hall together, the entire group walking two by two. Leia knew the seat at the far end of the table would be hers, guest of honor as counterpart to the host. So she walked the length of the room, attentive to the senator at her side, before glancing down at the arrangements—sumptuous even by Varish’s standards, with a velvet runner stretching along the table and delicate paper streamers lying across the tables, beneath elaborately folded napkins. Leia had to laugh. “Honestly, Varish. For breakfast?”
This won good-natured chuckles from the room; Varish Vicly’s lavish tastes were well known, a foible she herself joked about. Today, however, she shrugged. “I didn’t request this. Maybe the serving staff heard my name and assumed that meant to go all out for glamour.”
Varish smiled as she took her seat. “If that’s my reputation . . . you know, I can live with it.”
Leia settled into her chair, picked up her napkin—and stopped.
Something was written on the paper streamer on her plate. Actual writing. Virtually nobody wrote any longer; it had been years since Leia had seen actual words handwritten in ink on anything but historical documents.
But today, someone had left this message on her plate, only one word long:
RUN.
Leia shoved her chair back, instantly leaping to her feet. “We have to get out of here,” she said to the startled senators at the table. “Now. Go!”
But they didn’t move, even as she dashed toward the door. Varish said, “Leia? What in the worlds—”
“Didn’t you hear me?” These fools who had never been in the war, who didn’t know an urgent warning when they got one. Leia held up the paper so they could see it. “Run! Everyone get up and run!”
With that, she took off, running as fast as she could, finally hearing the others stir behind her. Maybe they thought the note was only a prank, but Leia knew better. The inchoate dread that had swirled inside her all morning had solidified; this was what her feelings had been warning her about.
As they dashed through the hallways of the conference building, Leia glimpsed an alert panel and swerved sideways to hit it. A robotic voice said, “No detected hazards at this—”
“Override! Evacuation alert now!” Leia resumed running just as the warning lights began to blink and the siren’s wail sounded. Immediately people began filing out of various other rooms, mostly grumbling but at least moving toward the exits—and when they saw her, they, too, started to run. The sense of urgency built behind her like a wave cresting, preparing to crash.
Leia’s breath caught in her throat as she pushed herself harder, running full out toward the doors, so fast they almost didn’t have time to open for her. In the square beyond, security droids had begun herding people away from the building, but too many continued to mill around, staring in consternation at the scene. The others evacuating flooded through the doors behind and around her, but once they were clear of the structure, half of them stopped, remaining stupidly within range.
Within range of what? She still didn’t know. But every instinct within her—the Force itself—screamed that disaster was near.
Leia didn’t stop. She kept running as hard as she could, never looking back, until . . .
Brilliant light. A roar so loud it resonated in her skull. And hot air and debris slamming into her, knocking her down, rolling her over, erasing the world.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2017The first SW book I ever read was Claudia Gray's Lost Stars. My expectations were low: Star Wars is such a visually rich setting, after all, and I had doubts as to how well it would translate to the written word. If anything, I only expected a fun romp through the Star Wars universe. I certainly didn't expect it to be an arresting and heart-wrenching piece of fiction. But it turned out to be both. I loved it enough that it was the first book I picked as a favorite read for last year. And I loved Gray's writing enough that I would eagerly pick up whatever she wrote for the expanded universe next. The fact that this happened to be a story that focused on Leia only managed to increase my interest.
Bloodline features and older, wiser, slightly weary Leia, still serving in her function as a Senator for the New Republic. At the beginning of the story, tired of all the ceremony and hypocrisy of politics, she's determined to retire from it all, but not before engaging in one last diplomatic mission which she hopes will do some actual, genuine good for the galaxy -- not to mention serve as one final adventure. That this adventure should prove to uncover a vast and deep conspiracy that threatens not only her personal safety and reputation but the fate of the entire galaxy should really come as no big surprise -- this is a Star Wars story, after all.
Gray's portrayal of Leia is beautifully nuanced, and balances the political and personal aspects of the character with grace and aplomb. This is a Leia that is a brilliant and savvy politician, as well as a bad-ass who knows how to handle a blaster and is ready to throw down at a moment’s notice.
"Leia lifted her blaster, losing her sights on Rinnrivin’s guard — and targeting the central strut of the tunnel support directly overhead. One bolt held the entire thing together. That bolt was no larger than a child’s fist. At this range, in semi-darkness, perhaps one shot in a thousand might be capable of destroying that bolt. But Leia made the shot."
In short, the very same Leia that we all know and love. The same Leia that the late, great Carrie Fisher brought to life. Gray's capable prose does her more than enough justice.
The story is made all the more interesting by the fact that it deals heavily with politics, something that the prequels tried to do with very mixed and muddy results. It’s one of the more fascinating aspects in Bloodline however, and the intrigue and West Wing-like drama of it all carries the story through. That the political landscape of the novel happens to look very much like our own just adds a more surreal and slightly ominous layer to it all.
Gray has gone on record to say that Bloodline wasn’t written as commentary, it's pretty hard, especially after the events of last November, not to view the story as a reflection of our current reality. Part of the reason that Leia wants to retire has to do with the Senate devolving into a two-party system -- parties that are themselves fragmented into conflicting fractions. She laments how "every debate on the Senate floor turns into an endless argument over ‘tone’ or ‘form’ and never about issues of substance." And try to read this bit of dialogue and tell me it doesn't sound like something you’d find on a recent think piece.
“Surely you won’t deny the New Republic is committing mistakes of its own.”
“Not the evils of tyranny and control.”
“No. The evils of absence and neglect.”
And, of course, there’s the now viral quote at the close of the book that has gained new relevance in light of yesterday's marches:
“The sun is setting on the New Republic," Leia said. "It's time for the Resistance to rise.”
Indeed.
Bloodline is both a brilliant character portrait and relevant social commentary. Claudia Gray can write Star Wars like no other and I will read anything she writes in this universe.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2016It was difficult for me to decide between three and four stars on this book. I finally went with four because I believe Gray's writing is superb, most of my quibbles with this story are falling outside the purview of what she can change within her story - i.e., I do not for a minute buy this nonsense that Han & Leia spend half of their lives apart! But this is something not set by the author, and her handling of that relationship is as best as can be expected within the constraints of what she has to work with.
As for the rest of the book, I very much appreciated the background being laid for the events of The Force Awakens. Dare I say I would have liked to have had this background going INTO the movie rather than months after it. Again I realize they want to keep the secrecy for the films, but I watched TFA the other day after having read this book and found that the political background of the galaxy made a lot more sense after having read Bloodline and it's the kind of background I really wanted when I watched the film for the first time. .
I appreciate also the way they dealt with Leia's avoidance of her father's identity. While I'll admit that I prefer Leia coming to terms with this identity much earlier in her canon point (as was in the Legends timeline), I do find the idea of her not wanting to do so believable and a fascinating twist, that potentially also sets up interesting background for her son as well. The outcry of the galaxy feels at once believable, and yet, to a degree also not? Because this is a woman who has worked for two decades for the galaxy and it feels a bit as if there would be a few more allies based upon her work, even if there would be a large outcry against it, but this is a minor quibble.
I really liked a lot of the original characters and found them well-written and given solid motivations for their answers, perhaps at times they were more believable to me than Leia herself - probably because my view of Leia just does not jive with how they are currently writing her, which again, I believe isn't Gray's fault so much as the direction the current team is going with their stories. :|
Overall though, this is a well-written story and perhaps one of my favorite's in this new canon. And I do really like Leia being political, and working for the galaxy. (Can we maybe also get some stories with her doing some of that with Han or Luke or being a mother? Or is that going to be too much to ask from this timeline?) I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to know more about the political lead-up to the events of The Force Awakens and anyone who wants a well written Leia story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Une aventure captivante dans l'univers Star Wars !

5.0 out of 5 stars One of, arguably the definitive, the best SW novels that I have ever had the pleasure of reading
My God, where to begin?! This was my first SW novel ever, and I completely adored it! Not only is it centred around Leia (one of my favourite characters), who has been so immaculately characterised, it is just a perfect piece of esteemed literature. The story has such a quintessential Star Wars character to it, and perfectly encapsulates all the themes, notions and ideas r.e love, action, heartbreak, conflict, betrayal, humour, political corruption etc, just to name a few! All the characters are endearing and captivating, especially Leia’s close alliance. Characterisation is very well-written and because of such, character motivations are clear to see as the plot unravels. The conflict between Leia and Casterfo is one of the more interesting dynamics in SW for me, comparable (in terms of how interesting it is to watch it develop as the plot grows) to the Cienna/Thane relationship. It is plainly clear that Claudia Gray has such a through in-universe understanding of SW, which is always appreciated by the fans. I love most of all though the sheer epic scale of the story: the political conspiracy, the antagonists, and yet one of the most interesting aspects was the overbearing conflict within Leia as she contends with the trauma about her true parentage - the exploration of this is absolutely pivotal to the novel. This novel adds a new dimension when rewatching Leia in the original trilogy - for instance, during the Carbon Freeze scene, it is now more plainly obvious the sheer resentment and hostility Leia holds in her eyes towards her father, Darth Vader, as Han Solo descends. Leia confronts all these experiences with a such a human and characteristic feisty temperament that relates the reader to Leia in an, arguably, greater way than the original trilogy did. High praise indeed, I know.
Honestly, there is not really anything I can complain about this, I love it so much.
Final verdict:
10/10
I completely adore Star Wars: Bloodline.

5.0 out of 5 stars O melhor do novo cânon

5.0 out of 5 stars This answers so many questions about TFA
Extremely well written and fast-paced; I couldn’t put it down. Claudia Gray is the best SW author. I have a newfound love for Princess Leia. What a tragedy Carrie Fisher isn’t with us anymore to finish what Bloodline started - The First Order!

5.0 out of 5 stars stupendo
