To keep the people she loves safe, Sara left everything she knew behind. She soon learns this new world is nothing like her old one, and she struggles to make a place for herself among the Mohiri. But it soon becomes apparent to Sara and to everyone one around her that she is not your typical warrior.

As the weeks pass, Sara builds new relationships, copes with her new trainers, and tries to manage her ever-changing powers, while keeping her unique heritage a secret. Looming in the background is the constant shadow of the Master who will do anything to find her.

Sara finds herself on a journey of self-discovery that uncovers her true strengths and awakens a part of her she never knew existed. She experiences the delight of new friendships, the sweetness and pain of first love, and a loss so deep it could be the thing that finally breaks her. Nikolas...oh Nikolas!
 photo Giggling.gif

I mean, don't get me wrong, I didn't read the book just for him - honestly! *coughs loudly & glances away*

This book was just as amazing, if not better than, the previous book and I am super-duper excited to see what is to come in this series :)

NB: Three cheers for Desmund! By far one of my fave new characters, he reminded me a lot of Myrnin from The Morganville Vampires series by Rachel Caine - a little crazy, but a good guy at heart <3

✅ New setting
✅ Plot
✅ Action
✅ Characters
✅ Paranormal creatures
✅ Romance

This series continues to be filled with action and intrigue and I would dare say that this book was even better than the first one. It was different, in a good way, we get to meet new characters and to discover new places.

Sara is now living with the Mohiri where she is training to become a fighter (even though she spent the first book telling Nikolas that she was not a warrior). There she meets other orphans like her, and some of the new characters are awesome. Especially Jordan and Desmund. Jordan is a kick-ass teenager with a lot of fire, Desmund is the weird recluse yet brilliant Mohiri of the place. Nikolas was not even in the book for the first part so his relationship with Sara continues to evolve at a slow pace, it makes it all the more exciting (because let's face it, we know that they are going to end up together.

I really like the way the relationship between Sara and Nickolas develops in this book. They don't fall head over heels for each other right away, Sara has doubts and fears when it comes to love, and Nickolas is respecting that and not pushing.

This sequel was really amazing, everything flows together and I just couldn't stop reading. There is never a dull moment with Sara!

MAY 2015: *sigh* I really do love these books. I am almost pissed at myself for giving in and rereading these months before the 3rd book comes out....damn you cliffhanger! I forgot how big of a bitch you were.

This book is different than the first book. Not in any bad way....New place, new characters. Nikolas isn't in the beginning, it is actually a while before you see him...its all sorts of sad. I love him more than all of my other fictional boyfriends...I think, anyway....well currently I love him more than all the others. Sara....she had her annoying moments, but I still think she is really badass. I love them together, thats for sure!!

I love this series. It is just so well written and I simply can't get enough. I wish October would just get here already so I can have my Nikolas fix.

-------------

JAN 2015 NO! IT'S OVER!! and I have to wait until the end of the year for the 3rd one.....fml. such a great series!!! this author is amazing and I want the 3rd one right this second.

Guys....I think need help......I have fallen for another handsome and wonderful Russian warrior who doesn't exist.....what am I supposed to do with myself!!!

HO-LY SHIT! THIS BOOK WAS AHHHHMAZING!!!

I am broken.
And I thought I had the next book stashed in my Kindle library somewhere but I actually DON'T! DO YOU GUYS REALIZE WHAT A DISASTER THIS IS??

Admittedly, it was a bit difficult to get into at first because I read the first one so long ago that I really don't remember what happened. A lot of things happened based on the last book that I didn't remember and it was still a phenomenal experience. Can you image how much more amazing it would have been had I recalled the events of the first book?

I also just found out that it's actually a five-book series when I originally thought it was a trilogy!!!

HOT DAMN. GUYS I AM POSITIVELY MELTING UNDER THE ROMANTIC TENSION. ICAN'TMYCHESTHURTSHELPMEEEEEE!
Maybe you can tell I love Sara. She's like a badass Snow White----in terms of animal friends only, though. I hate Snow White: weak little chick.
And I also love Nikolas, like, a lot.
God, they are so damn perfect!
*melts*

And I would like to point out that it wasn't instalove.

Jordan is FABULOUS! Fantastic character! Awesome. All Sara's friends are amazing.
Desmond is without a doubt one of my favorites!

Celine is just the same bitch/cheerleader from every other book who hates the lead because she has the man ensnared.

I would like to make it known that I've read enough books to anticipate I'm such a great book detective haha xD

ARC Copy for an Honest Review

I inhaled the first book, Relentless, in May and immediately went searching for it’s sequel. After 6 months of waiting, I was not disappointed.
The second book in the Relentless series contains the same unique storyline filled with intrigue and action that made the first book fabulous. Karen Lynch creates a setting that the reader can fully immerse themselves in and Sara continues to be a rock-solid female lead. Her relationship with Nikolas develops with twists and turns and many old characters return along with the debut of new favorites you’ll love. After the conclusion of the book, readers will be demanding more.
Can’t wait to see what we get next from Karen Lynch!

ARC copy of Refuge--- For honest review

Exceptional Read from an amazing author.
Karen Lynch wrote a wonderful story, full of suspense action and romance. It has a little bit of everything in it. The whole story flows together so smoothly, that your in the book, between the pages with the characters and forget where you are.
Lets talked about Sara. I absolutely love her, she was great in the first book, but she grows more in this one i think, and her empathy for everyone and everything is just nice to see, i cant give away any spoilers but for the 'one' who wrong her (you'll find out in the book, i was surprised by this one i did not see it coming.) i would not have felt sorry for the 'one' nor would i have done what she did.
Sara also makes a good friend at her new place, and i loved the friend to death, everyone one could use one like her. Confusing yes but no spoilers.
Desmond is someone new we get to meet and i liked him very much, why i have no idea but i did. :)
Nickolas, about him lets see, well i have a love/hate relationship with him. but there was a very touching scene between him and Sara that change my mind bout the hot head.
Nickolas and Sara's relationship moves so smoothly, that i don't find a hard time believing it one but. i hate when its love at first sight and so forth a relationship needs to move slow advance toward something.
I liked the different 'animals' that was introduced in this book, it was very interesting to learn some facts about them.
As for the end, well i wish it never ended.

Would i recommended this book. Most definitely (Read above. :)) Its everything would could want in a book plus more.

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVED IT!
I wasn't too sure what to make of this series when I first heard about it so I took a chance and downloaded the First book Relentless because it was free of my Kindle/Amazon! I was soon speeding through and enjoying the book but when it came to the ending I just HAD to order Refuge! It wasn't left in a typical cliffhanger way but from the moment I read the last line I just HAD to know what came next which is really a credit to the author because the story was just amazing! But Refuge? Pffft. blew Relentless out of the water!

description

Yes the book is just as kicks as the first but the Romance? YES YES YES YES, it had it all!
NO INSTA LOVE None whatsoever, none of this complete soul mates, can't live without each other crap within 10 pages of the book none! The author makes you work hard to get the good stuff.... and its AMAZING! Yet still I am left reeling from Refuge like.. WHAT? THIS IS NOT ENOUGH!

These books have quickly become a favourite of mine, the characters are just great; the heroine Sara? I love her.. She's so badass when it comes to her friends and family you can't help but root for her! Nikolas? He wasn't the main reason for getting next day delivery on Amazon HONEST. He's just drool worthy every time his name was even mentioned on the page I was literally giddy with excitement! Gotta love a dark/broody man!

I cannot wait for Rogue and if it's title is anything to go on we will not be disappointed! Safe to say I will defiently be pre-ordering it! EEEK :)

My Blog. Feel free to check it out :)

I really want to give this 3 stars because the ending was so disappointing. After everything that has happened Sara still acts like an immature spoiled brat.

I loved the first book. It was one of my top 5 for the year. The first half of this book I felt that way too. I thought ok we are making progress!

But then she finds out about the bond with Nikolas and freaks. Seriously. What in the HELL is her problem? The best part of her is him! I am feeling very distressed over this. If she does something to mess up there bond....I might break my kindle!

Whew!

I never in a lot of years thought I would ever fall in love with a YA anything ever again but Karen Lynch, girl, I'm sold. I absolutely devoured this second installment. Remember all those monsters I talked about in book one? She takes it to another level in book two. For real, for real.

I just want to gush about all the different aspects of this story. Before I get all up in my feelings, here's the gist. At the end of the first book, Sara agrees to go to the Mohiri compound to train to be a warrior because while she has incredible lick on her side, she's a terrible warrior and she admits this to herself numerous times. She misses her friends and family and is only marginally sad about missing senior year but she knows it's for the best because there's a vampire out there trying to kill her but everyone in the human world believes she's dead.

With the Mohiri she struggles to fit in. She always had a way with making friends easily, whether girl or guy, mostly guy, so do course the girls get jealous until they really get to know Sara. This compound she's staying at has a menagerie where she ends up finding refuge from such a stark change of living. Her hellhounds are in there as well as a wyvern, and some other really cool beasties. One of the main reasons she's feeling left out though is because Nikolas practically dropped her at their doorstep and then went away so Sara was feeling burned by that a bit but we'll get to Nikolas later.

She begins to acclimate and in the background she has David looking for her mom because she still seeks answers about the identity of the Master. I'd they can find and kill him then the world will be able to breathe a little easier. Strange things begin to happen however that are not a normal occurence at this compound and naturally people believe Sara has something to do with it all. And she does sort of but not how you would think. This leads to a lot of unexpected battles and revelations and just awesome fantasy warrior world bad ass beastie awesomeness. And tragedies. And just a lot of well written everything!

Now let's talk about Nikolas real quick. A good chunk of this story is about the developing relationship between Sara and Nikolas. I have never read such an oblivious character as Sara but her thinking was completely believable. She also had a habit of pointing out how clueless she was after the fact and is one of those people that rewinds and goes over a situation again and truly sees what she missed. Her inner monologue was never annoying for me which normally it would be in a YA, overly dramatic and what not but this simply worked. Nikolas is just fantastic. I can't go into detail about him without sounding like a swoony romantic but seriously. My guy... Yep. And that one moment and then that other moment?? Fire.

Overall, I'm cemented as a fan and I'm about to dive into the third one which was the last one and now it's not but I'm gonna pretend it still is.

****Edit****

I went to take a shower and realized I forgot to talk about my girl Jordan. She is one of the best girl friends in a book. She's that friend that is blunt and admiring at the same time and always, always tells it like it is and not afraid to ask THOSE questions and doesn't hesitate to say sorry when she messed up. She is the best female Sara had at her back hands down.

LOVED the first one. Mostly liked this one.. But there is such thing as too much sass. In first book I admired Sara's strength of character, independence, and kindness. (She was a little immature, but I legit go because she was 17!) This book felt like the author knew I liked those things so she amped them up and gave them steroids. Each one of those things ended up annoying me by the end of the book. Her strength and convictions turned stubborn and obstinate, her independence was over the top (poor nikolas) and her kindness popped up in the most obnoxious places.. I ended up barely being able to stand the girl! Throughout the book she was a headstrong, confused, little tantrum throwing child who couldn't make up her damn mind. If there was a dramatic choice to be made, she inevitable choses the one that will be most likely to make her look back (after it all goes to shit) and be like. "Huh, prob shouldn't have done that "

I also found it predictable.. The twists felt poorly planned and forced, and you saw them coming from a mile away. Sometimes two.

Despite what this review would lead you to believe, I did like this book!! I think the reason I got super harsh there was because instead of ending the book with a sigh of contentment, posting the review with rose colored glasses, then remembering the things that drove me nuts later, the book ended at her most annoying shenanigan yet, so I ended the book even more irritated than I would have been had it ended a chapter sooner. I might have been more Forgiving if there was a Nicolas pov chapter or 2... (Hint hint)

Just when I thought it couldn't get better, it gets better. I thought this book was even better than the first. I am on to book 3 immediately. I'm really enjoying this world and the side characters are some of the best I've seen. There are so many great characters in this book. Normally there's maybe a couple, but I really like all the side characters and especially all her little, and not so little, animal friends. Just go into this blind and have the next books handy! Luckily, there's NO CLIFFHANGERS!!!!

This book i might not have liked as much as the first, but it was good. There wasn't enough action in it for me.

Don't get me wrong, Sara still got into trouble, and attracted it, but she wasn't in danger as much as in the first book. And i wanted a bit more of that Russian Mohiri Nikolas, but all comes to those who wait, and here i am.

The second book continues from the point where the first one ended. Again In this book we have a lot of action and breathtaking scenes and above all the great love between Sara and Nikolas who continues to warm my heart. One of the most romantic books I've read full of passion and also written so well like the first one.
I marked 179 highlights and 13 notes. That means a lot!

This series is AHMAZING!!!

description

It is one of the lesser known series, but it is seriously good. I was genuinely shocked to see that it wasn't more famous. The second book in the series isn't as great as the first one but it is still very very good. Although there was a bit of stereotyping of Arabs in the first book, the second book didn’t have that problem. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading YA fantasy books: You will love this!

This is the way you’re going to feel once you have read it;
description

Gosh, I don’t even know where to start. I’ll just list some of the things I loved about this book:

1. The world building is spectacular. It is very well built and I didn’t really see any holes in the plot.
2. There are plenty of interesting secondary charaters.
3. The main character is relatable and likable, although she does have small bouts of self-pity now and then.
4. Nicholas makes me SWOON!!!
description
5. PLENTY of action.
6. Cute romance.
7. Never a dull moment!!!

The first book completely blew my mind and the second book didn't disappoint either. Now I’m really looking forward for the final book. *waiting patiently*

It took me a Relentless amount of time to figure out what to say about this book. (No pun intended) ;) I just can't express how much I love this series.

I was close to giving up on Fantasy/Paranormal YA books before reading Relentless and now Refuge. They have opened the genre up for me once again, this series is fantastic, I'm never bored when reading Karen Lynch's world. I love everything from the characters to the monsters to the enemies...
These are my most beloved books that I have ever read. Do Not hesitate in reading this series, I'm sad everytime I finish these books yet always excited to see what's going to be new.

So... Thank you Karen Lynch for bringing us these fab novels that I bloody adore and always give me heartbreak as I wait for the next ones to be published.

I was lucky enough to get my hands on an ARC copy of Refuge. In an effort to keep this spoiler free, I'll keep my review simple.

Karen Lynch wrote another riveting, action-packed installment in Sara's quest to outrun the Master vampire hunting for her. The page turning pace kept me reading well past my bedtime, and the romantic tension between Sara and Nickolas had me chanting, "Come on...kiss!" in my head. Nicolas continues to be the strong alpha character we got to know and love in the first book. I loved Sara's discovery of her heritage and the new possibilities it opens for her.

If you loved Relentless, this sequel is another must read.

I am really enjoying this series and I'm already starting the third book.

I loved Desmund so freaking much in Refuge! Seriously, he's one of my favorite character in this book. Next is probably Nikolas. Ah, I love to read how the relationship develop between him and the FMC. Can't wait to see more of them.

As for the 'twist' (if you can call it that), I saw it coming from the start. Also, I'm not sure how I feel about that ending. I think she's being a bit stupid and reckless. I hope

Huh. I was wholly won over by the first novel in this series, Relentless--it surprised me in so many ways, and I was struck by how well Lynch could write and tell a story, much better than I had expected. (I recognize good writing, but I'm also a sucker for a good story, and I notice that a lot of indie authors may be better at the latter than the former, if good at either.) I found myself really caring about the characters and excited to learn about the world, even though paranormal is not at all my thing.

This novel was, comparatively, a major disappointment. Let's be real, one of the major winning points of the first novel was the burgeoning romance between Sara and Nikolas--and here, Nikolas isn't even in the book until about a quarter of the way through. And the writing and storytelling overall just felt much more awkwardly and haphazardly done here than in the first book (to the point where I'm wondering if maybe I'm not remembering the first one correctly). There are moments when the romance is still compelling, but honestly, only because I want it to be--the stakes and the obstacles don't feel real enough, and honestly, I love a heroine that can be oblivious, but only if I believe that she's oblivious--and I didn't feel like I had enough reason to believe Sara.

I also hate to say this, but Sara is definitely a Mary Sue in this novel. I have nothing against a female character that is strong, beloved, and innocent all at once--I love those characters. But in this case, Sara really only has the one strong female friend, is otherwise surrounded by boys who all love her (and more than one who love only her, while being sulky toward everyone else), tames magical beasts no one else can, and thinks none of this is a big deal. I don't have a problem with these elements individually, but all together, it did feel like a bit much--and it just wasn't handled deftly enough that I really believed it.

To me, the story also lacked flow. There was no really coherent plot, just a series of training and being moody with Nikolas and meeting lots of new characters, not all of whom are really important. And I don't know if I just didn't notice it as much for the first novel, but I was surprised by the somewhat frequent f-bombs and language. There's the occasional violence and sexual innuendo by side characters, but otherwise, it's fairly clean. Spoiler alert: whereas the first book just had subtext, this book actually includes two kiss scenes. They're brief enough, I think.

I still finished the novel, obviously, and because I loved the first novel so much, I want to finish out the series. But I'm sad that this one didn't really measure up to the first.

Five bright burning stars!

Karen Lynch is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors -- and Sara one of my favorite heroines. She's the kind of character you root for all the way. She's kind to animals, in tune with nature, and sympathetic toward people, even when they're difficult, rude, and even traitorous!

One of my favorite lines: "I don't kill for sport."

Let me say how delighted I was by Sara's sympathy toward all creatures, even bazerats (demon rats). That was especially awesome since I've been known to say, "I wouldn't want any animal to suffer. Not even a rat!"

The kindness Sara displays consistently throughout the series is what I consider True Strength. Strength of character. Anyone can wield a knife or throw a punch. Sara is truly selfless and tops my list of all-time favorite heroines.

Oh my gosh, the humor is Awesome!

"Been there, got the T-shirt."
"He did everything but pee a circle around you to mark his territory."
"Just tell me, was he wearing his sword? I have a thing for men with swords. The bigger the sword, the better."

Ha!

And finally, love this:

"Human girls bonded over things like boys and music; we bonded over kicking demon ass."

I eagerly await book 3.

4.5/5

A small part of me was worried that this book wouldn't be as good as good as Relentless but it totally was.

I only gave this book a 4.5 because Sara seemed different than in the first book. I wouldn't call her "weak" but she wasn't her normal more stubborn self until a little later in the book. I loved Nikolas though (maybe even more than in the first book). And there romance. Man, I didn't think it could get any better but it did! There were some great secondary characters, like Desmund, and I hope that they are going to be in the next book.

I loved all of the action, especially close to the end, and I couldn't stop reading. Since I'm thinking about the ending, there was a massive cliffhanger. I can't wait to read the third book soon.

REFUGE BY KAREN LYNCH
★★★★★ (5 stars)
________________________________

✔ While I was strict rating the first book with "only" 4 stars, I'm happy to say that this book deserves 5 stars (even more) without hesitation!

The beginning made me a bit worried, because it seemed like the thing that slightly annoyed me in the first book did not change (), but I shouldn't have been worried! After I started reading, I couldn't stop!

The writing is absolutely brilliant!

I loved the characters, they made me laugh and cry. I loved that there was more romance in this book than in the previous one. The chemistry between Sara and Nikolas is strong and powerful.

The mythological creatures! I loved that beside vampires and werewolves so many other creatures got a lot of space in the plot. The demons, hellhounds, fairies, kelpies, and so many others made this book really colorful and interesting.

The action! There was never a dull moment! Loved it!

This book is really good. The beginning was boring. It was annoying because nothing was happening. Then the second half was full of surprises. The revelation that Sara is Nicholas's mate, Nicholas's possessiveness towards Sara and almost everything was excellent. The plot twist when Nate turned out a Vampire and I almost thought he would die. He is one of my favorite side characters and it would be devastating. But luckily he didn't die and was also turned human again and now he can walk.I was almost dancing with happiness.

I love the romance between Nicholas and Sara. Tristan was fun too. Sara was embarrassed when Tristan lecturing Nicholas that about Sara's virtue and I was laughing through the whole scene. I have the same problem with this book as I had with Relentless, both book is lengthy and in some cases it sounded boring.

I read Relentless back in March and the second installment in this series has been on my mind ever since. I knew the release date was coming up and luckily I was able to get my hands on an ARC of Refuge. I was glued to the pages every chance I got. Unfortunately work got in the way and slowed down my progress. I finished the book last night and I absolutely can't wait for the next one! I loved the character development and also the introduction of new characters to Sara's story. Thank you Karen for writing such a phenomenal book. I look forward to reading all your future novels.

Tahle série mě moc baví! Kdyby se Sara furt nechovala jak malá holka (obzvlášť v samotném závěru knihy), dala bych snad i pět hvězd.

This was such a great sequel to Relentless.

I think I'm loving her character more here. It's awesome because we get to find out more about Sara's powers. This time, she's not as stubborb and reckless as before. She has learned the value of following rules etc.

Aside from meeting new friends and seeing new things, she's also starting to feel more and more for the warrior, Nikolas. And oh what a thing they have between them! I'd like to say that it's pretty shocking, but I actually expected it.. and it's awesome!! ♥♥♥

That action part at the end of the book? PURE GENIUS!!!! I swear it!!! This author is damn amazing. She made one powerful being! I love it!!

"What do you think, demon? You ready to make some other friends."
"No."

I loved the direction this book went. I had a feeling that there was a type of bond/connection and it made me swoon. I swear I was smiling for most of this book because of the new characters and the banter between Nikolas and Sara. Seriously Jordan is awesome, badass, and hilarious! I loved her! And I freakin love Nikolas.

UGH WHY Sara?? That ending pissed me off! But it still did not deter me from giving it five stars!
