Trunk'd

Rate this book
Dear Author,
There is a dead body inside the trunk of my car…

I can’t believe this— I leave my car at the airport and when I return from my 3-day trip and am going to put my luggage, there is a dead body in it. It is the body of a senator’s son who has been kidnapped several days before. Suddenly, I have a homicide detective asking me questions and reporters trying to get a story from me and the senator making grief phone calls— and not to mention the kidnappers who somehow think I could help the Police Department break this case. How this is my life? I’m just a boring accountant. How the heck could I get out from this mess?

And how can I land a date with the brooding homicide detective who works this case? Uhm, yeah, so this last one, might be a wishful thinking but darn, he’s dreamy…

Photo Description:
Two pictures of two men— one, a young man with a sleeve of tattoos and thick hair wearing a dress shirt and suspenders; the other, an African-American man with a goatee. The African-American is a police detective, and the young man is an accountant who found a body in the trunk of his car.

This story was written as a part of the M/M Romance Group's "Love’s Landscapes" event. Group members were asked to write a story prompt inspired by a photo of their choice. Authors of the group selected a photo and prompt that spoke to them and wrote a short story.

A - I got stuck at this quote: "...the strap on his carry-on had broken." Strap on? Strap-on? What? Why does a man need a....oh. Ooooh! Ok. Seriously, I read that sentence 4 times before it occurred to me that MC Steven Wright wasn't referring to kinky little smex games. I've got an extremely slow, yet dirty, mind.

B - The name "Steven Wright." I kept imagining the comedian.

It actually made for some pretty interesting reading.

Other than that...I would only recommend this for lovers of really silly fun. I am generally one such lover, but I could not stop silently screaming in my head that That's not how you run an investigation! Who does shit like that? How did any of these people graduate from Cop School? And what the FUCK is up with that Senator?! Oh, a giant schlong. Ok, well, that is quite enjoyable.

But this is supposed to be ridiculous fluffy fun so clearly I need to relax. Maybe this'll help:

I'm relaxing already. Oh, Steven, you just make everything better.

2.5 stars. And thank you to the author for the free read. :))

So a hot accountant and hot detective hook up during a murder investigation. The prompt was awesome! The prompt pictures...drool worthy. It's actually one of my favorite prompts.

This story was light fun (even with the murders) with funny banter (I like the length given because I could see myself being annoyed with Steven if it were longer). The suspense part was easily solved but I wasn't really reading for the mystery.

Super hung cop, big guy bottoming...and a cute end.

3.5

Thanks to the author and team!

Not good. Neither cute nor funny, but silly and irritating.

The characters were childish (the senator was infantile), the plot had all the sophistication of a Scooby Doo episode, the dialogue was stiff and juvenile, and there were blatant crimes against italics.

3.5, pushed to 4 because I wanted to!

I just love Tam Ames. I needed this one today, and she delivered in spades. It made me laugh, made me sigh, made me want my own cop--and now I can tackle the rest of the 4th of July preparations with a smile and a better attitude than the one I previously had. This story and some wine will do that. Thank you, Ms. Ames.

Hot cop and smart-mouthed adorable accountant.

This was cute. Honestly, I spent a good portion of my time while reading this story reminiscing about a classmate's older brother, Terry. Gorgeous and built like a tight end--damn he was fine. So, what can I tell you about the story? Tame murder mystery which bumbles along as the guys screw up and basically solves itself. This isn't a mystery read. It's a romance.

Favorite quote:
At least, he could check off his life list that he was with a super-hung guy.

^^^^^
Overrated bucket list item.

It was a good little story and fit the prompt nicely --

I thought the senator was creepily bothered (he needed a therapist!!!) and yes Terry, an accountant could have tattoo!! (although I wish Tam Ames elaborated on HOW Steven got his tattoo).

The mystery was predictable but then again it was only 13k. AND the HFN ending fit the situation since the prompt clearly stated no insta-love.

I liked and it did made me smile several times with the banters between Steven and Terry. So yep, a good one.

OK, so the MCs both act like immature teenagers on crack and the murder plot is extremely silly, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. A fun light-hearted little romp of a story.

It was a Freebie and it was an ok read.
It was short and kind of "meh".

I didn't understand what the Senator was supposed to be in this story - a stupid distraction, comic relief??? The old man just lost his son and was made fun of.

Not cool.

I loved the author letter, and the prompt images were super hot...unfortunately I didn't feel like the story came together in any kind of conceivable way that elevated it above slapstick. From finding the body, to handling the witnesses - all the way to "solving" the murder: EVERYTHING had this edge of ridiculousness (and I'm not sure it was meant to be so).

I can honestly say I'm probably never going to read another story or book by this author; I just didn't find it appealing (or mature, or polished).

synopsis:
steven returns after a 3 day business trip looking forward to getting into bed, because he has to be in the office first thing in the morning. when he opens the trunk of his car, there is a dead body in it. he calls 911 and gets in the car to keep warm. when the cops come, he is taken in as a suspect. after he is cleared, he has to deal with a suspicious cop, a sobbing father and someone who seems to want to take him out.

what i liked: the premise was interesting.

what i didn't like: well...the cop procedures just seemed wrong. they had steven booked as a suspect and then after talking to him for a few minutes about his whereabouts without fact checking at all, decided that he hadn't done it. then terry, the cop that steven is attracted spends the night with him the day after he is supposedly cleared and leaves. and steven is hurt that this cop, who is trying to do his job and is NOT supposed to be sleeping with someone involved in the case leaves without much of a reaction other than oh shit. blech.

Well, there are things you never expect to find. Especially, when you are frazzled and beyond tired after a long trip and flying. Steven finds a dead body in the trunk of his car where it has been sitting in the parking lot. Well, that of course brings in the cops. One particular sexy cop named Terry. They aren’t very friendly and hit it off when they first meet. In fact, they both get under each other’s skin…there is sexual tension thick in the air.
Terry comes to the conclusion that Steven isn’t the killer, but someone trouble is still following him around. The killer/s thinks Steven knows more about the case than he really does. As the list of suspects narrow down, Terry and Steven tension finally breaks… but will everything work out in the end???

This was a 5* read, as I liked the set-up and the humor a lot, well, until we learned who did it. From then on it was a rush til the end and somehow I missed why the guys were murdered. Somehow the whole solution was muddled. But I liked Stephen and Terry together:)

ETA: just read the blurb - I started reading without that beforehand, ha! But even knowing now that there was a kidnapping, somehow I'm sure that wasn't in the story and even knowing that now, it doesn't make the whole solution any clearer.

contemporary detective story. When Steven returns to his car in an airport car park after three days away he discovers a dead body in the boot. Enter detective Terry, and his partner Angie, to investigate. Steven and Terry don't get off to a good start and there is quite a lot of snark between the pair throughout, as well as some humour. The mystery itself was very easy to see, but the characters kept the story on track. Nice read.

This was a humorous story with MC named Steven Wright, which is really kind of funny if that was by accident. I enjoyed the story, and laughed a lot. My one problem with it was that the police procedure was really bad:

I thought it was funny, especially in the beginning.
The Senator was unbelievable, would have wished to overdo his behaviour in more ways than sobbing, than I would have enjoyed it more. I think these two won't make it because of their inability to communicate, that's why the otherwise funny banter bothered me when it came down to solving a misunderstanding.

DNF at 16%

In just a few pages, we have a black detective yelling at a white guy and the two of them bickering like school yard kids, his female partner being generically described as Asian, and lovely gems such as this: "He, shuddered, realizing he was stuck where the criminals sat, and who knew what kind of diseases they had." And that's where I stopped. I'm done.
