About the author

Martin Wickramasinghe

The search for roots is the central theme in Martin Wickramasinghe’s writings on the culture and life of the people of Sri Lanka. He imaginatively explored and applied modern knowledge in natural and social sciences, literature, linguistics, the arts, philosophy, education, and Buddhism and comparative religion to reach beyond the superficial emotionalism of vulgar nationalism, and guide us to the enduring roots of our common national identity that exists in the folklife and folk culture of Sri Lanka...

Martin Wickramasinghe’s vision was primarily nurtured in the tolerant, humane, realistic attitude to life traditional to Buddhist folk culture. He valued the intellectual freedom and independence inspired by the Buddha’s ‘Kalama Sutta’ which he saw as a tradition to question tradition, not unlike the Western scientific attitude. Through his writings, he consistently opposed dogmatism, casuistry, elitism, and oppression in any form, be it cultural, religious, political or social.

His works have been translated and published in English, Hindi, Tamil, Russian, Chinese, Romanian, Dutch, German, French and Japanese languages.

Wickramasinghe gives an idyllic presentation of Sri Lankan (rural) southern province childhood craftily mingled with that of his own in this book. A must-read if you study Sri Lankan culture practically.

This is by far, one of the best books I have ever read. Read this when I was kid and I used to write down its sentences to remember later. I was absolutely mesmerized by how beautifully this was written. Throughout the school life, this book provided me inspiration for all my creative writing tasks. This is absolutely one of a kind book that I would love to return to over and over again.

I first read this little gem of a book when I was 11 or so and absolutely enjoyed it. The book took me to a place that simply cannot be put to words. Now, I'm 24 and felt the same childish excitement and happiness when I saw this at the book fair this time. Bought it straight away and can't wait to open it so I can travel back time to the happy nostalgia of my carefree childhood :)

A must read for all contemporary kids and adults alike!

Well it was kinda boring at first but once i got the hang of the narrator i really started feeling the book, this is not a novel or a short story but more of a part of the Martin Wickramasinghe's childhood.
And the wired part is i too live in a beach village and it feels like me and the author have a common ground when it come to all the actives he describes related to the sea and beach.

I live in a fairly urban city and it was Martin Wickramasingha’s novels that gave me a glimpse on how a village works. I am still in love with the environment that he describes almost in each and every one of his books.

What are the thoughts that appear in a young child's mind? What makes them think differently? This book makes the readers see through Martin Wickramasinghe's points of view. It made me laugh at some moments, and sometimes, it made me cry. A wonderful book which is supposed to be read by all children.

This is very interesting book. This book also wrote Mr.Martin Wickramasinghe. Remember one time I was discuss about writer Mr.Martin Wickramasinghe; and this is about that book in Sri Lankan Language(Sinhala) Ape Gama means in English language "THE VILLAGE".
