1.5 stars. I have been catfished by this book and I'm mad about it. Let's analyze why, shall we?

1) That cover - there is like a buff, silver fox MMA dude on that cover. I was expecting to read about an adult protagonist. What did I get? Literal children. This book covers the protagonists life span from 7 to 19.
2) The blurb - it was all about Hollis Ward being this incredible fighter taking the MMA world by storm. Naturally I was expecting a book about cage fighting. What did I get? 85% high school nonsense and talk, 15% having anything to do with actual MMA.
3) This is clearly marketed as MM romance. And yet - we get an annoyingly large amount of truly terrible heterosexual teenage sex and very, very little romance.

I also found it to be weirdly written, with an unnecessary amount of irrelevant detail, but at the same time a frustrating lack of useful details. I found Hollis to be such a bland character, his literal only personality trait is wanting to be a fighter. Patrick was also this hazy person, not fully formed at all, despite how all the trigger warnings relate to him.

If you, like me, picked up this book because you were looking for some hot MMA action, then I suggest you adjust your expectations. Maybe it will redeem itself in the second part, but yikes, do I feel deceived.

Nothing to tell. This book is about ..nothing. Some kids doing kids things and playing fighters. No romance, no adults.. The kind of book that makes you exclaim “Wtf did I just read?!!?”

Cole Denton has become one of my favorite authors, this seals the deal. Seriously, I am blown away.

Was this a romance? I keep seeing that question everywhere. ARG!!

Traditionally, maybe not. What it was though was a damn good story about a boy who saves another from a terrible fate. Patrick didn't have hope, he didn't have anything until Hollis and his family.

Hollis's life after high school is practically set. He wants to be a caged fighter and has been working towards this goal since he was nine years old. At 16 his life changes when he meets Patrick. A friendship forms and the two are practically inseparable.

At 18 Hollis is heading straight towards his dreams and he is taking Patrick with him. He is never going to let his best friend be left behind.

The Dragon is the first book in what I know is going to be another epic series by Cole Denton and I can't wait to see what he has in store for Hollis, Patrick and whoever they meet along the way. Afterall, this is just the start and I have a feeling we haven't seen anything yet.

Cole Denton has KO’d me with the first book of his Takedown Series. The Dragon features Hollis, who is ready to become MMAs biggest star, his family and a young man named Patrick. It’s such an incredible book about discipline and dedication in life to go after what you want, having a supportive family around you and helping those that are not as fortunate as you while still figuring out who you are. It’s about friendship, brotherhood, mutual attraction and love. I wanted to jump in there at some dark times and hug Patrick while also taking some certain people down to the mat. Cole Denton has a knack for storytelling and his words and style just pull you in like a magnetic force that cannot be stopped. There was a heart stopping moment when I realised who two of the characters were, no spoilers from me but well played Denton, well played! I love how he weaves his book worlds together in some way. I’m totally hooked on this series out of the gate and cannot wait for more. Highly recommended.

Umm what? I’m so confused.

I was really excited about this book. I haven’t read a Cole Denton book that disappointed me yet but this book was marketed really odd?

Age gap MMA Romance ? Where?

At least we get the mm bi …

Why is the cover model an older guy? I don’t get it?

The book starts with young Hollis in Elementary School. And follows him up until he’s a 19 year old successful fighter. I loved the dynamic with his parents and brothers. And his friendship with Patrick. My heart ached for Patrick and what he went through and I enjoyed the book a lot. I couldn’t put it down. I’m conflicted because Patrick felt like a carbon copy of other Denton characters. Abused “broken” bi sexual male character and strong older male lifting him up. Except Hollis wasn’t older they were literally the same age??? Meeting in HS?? I’m just confused. lol Honestly I found myself engrossed in the story but how was this marketed as mm bisexual age gap?

Freaking amazing! Exceptionally well-written storyline! This story surpassed any expectations I had. It is that good! I felt like I was in the story watching it unfold. The Dragon is a heart-warmingly developed story about family and forever friendship. I was invested from page 1. I started it late at night and woke up thinking about it the next morning. I couldn't wait to be able to start reading it again. I embraced this cast of characters: Hollis, Patrick, Morgan, and yes, Chase. They are relatable and well-defined. The Dargon is a perfect mixture of angst, beauty, and romance. Cole Denton does not shy away from the "heavy" issues. I'm always impressed with how he writes them. I laughed. I cried. I cheered. I hoped. I have fallen captive and cannot wait until the next installment in this series. Do yourself a favor and go 1-click this book.

A-maxing

This book was so good I don’t even have the words. So many emotions, not to mention sexy AF. You’ll laugh and you’ll cry and be impatient for the next one. I highly recommend this book..

Early age Hollis

This story had a lot of really steamy scenes! Most of the book focused on Hollis growing up and his preparation to become a TCF fighter. We learn how Hollis and Patrick meet and become best friends.

I absolutely need more!!!

This was such an enjoyable story. The characters came to life in a way only Cole can do.

I loved seeing Hollis grow throughout the story. I only wish he was real. He's a strong lead and was probably not easy to write as there was so much "good" about him that needed balance to not be cheesy or annoying. Cole was able to get that balance. Hollis has dedication and drive and is an inspiration to others.

Best friend Patrick has the exact opposite upbringing of Hollis.
I loved watching how protective Hollis was for his friend and seeing them grow from high school to graduation and slightly beyond.

I need more! This story ends right at the beginning of The Dragons career, and I know Cole has lots up his sleeve. You will not regret jumping in and getting to know Hollis, the dragon, Ward. ❤️

Wow, absolutely a brilliant book

Well what can I say, other than Cole Denton has done it again. The Dragon is the first book in the Takedown Series where we get introduced to Hollis who is going to make it big in the MMA world and alone the way he becomes firm friends with Patrick who doesn't have the best family life. At some points in the book I really wanted to jump into the pages and do serious damage to Patrick's dad and step brother 🤬, that is how good Cole's writing is you can get emotional. I did towards the end of the book get a funny feeling that I'd heard a couple of the names mentioned before 🤔🤔 interesting. Yet again another brilliant book Cole I'm soo looking forward to the 2nd book in the series.

Ps apologies for the delay in the review I thought I'd wrote it when the book was released 🙈🤦‍♀️❤

I'm conflicted.
I enjoyed the story but, I wouldn't call this an age-gap or a romance. It was more of the making of Hollis and his relationship with Patrick. They're best friends who are there for each other when they need it most but, a romantic link wasn't really established.
There are more MF scenes than MM.
I thought there would be an older element due to the cover but they're young. So to me, that doesn't fit as well. The story itself was told well.
Like I said, I enjoyed it but, it wasn't what I was expecting. I'm hoping that The Throwaway continues their story and we can really dive into that aspect. Patrick has a lot to get through and if anyone can break through those barriers, it's Hollis.

I have so many words and I'm trying to figure out how to write them down. If you've read anything from Cole before you have a general idea of what to expect. You know you're going to get good writing, great characters, traumatic experiences and humor. The amount of emotions you go through really speaks to how amazing his story telling is. Hollis and his family are really good people and you wish you could be a part of their family. Patrick is going to tear at your heart strings in a big way. This is definitely the beginning of what's going to be a great series. If you're familiar with Cole’s work you probably noticed some familiar names 🤐. And if he's new to you I suggest you read his other books.

Captivating!

The Dragon caught me and would not let go! Cole Denton’s stories are always captivating. The characters are amazing and always leave me wanting more. My only complaint (that I did not subtract stars for) is the cover led me to believe this was about an older man. It couldn’t be farther from the truth. The Dragon starts when Hollis is in elementary school and ends before he is old enough to legally drink. I can only hope that Denton continues the series far into Hollis’ life!

Alright, I was really excited to read this MMA romance but must say I'm a little disappointed. While the cover has a mature, silver fox, the story was based on a young Hollis and followed his life from a little boy up through his high school years to age nineteen. I will say that I enjoyed the way his family's characters were written with their varying personalities and my heart hurt so much for his friend Patrick.
Not much in the way of actual fights happened as at the end of the book is the beginning of his professional career.

Cole Denton hits the heart strings again.

Cole does it again, He pulls the heart strings again and it keeps going till the end. Hollis and Patrick capture my heart right off as well as Holis's family. Cole writes don't forget me characters I definitely won't. Tears and laughter are amazing through out this beautiful book.
I'm truly in aww of the heart he gave Holis
I really could on an on over this awesome book. (Loosing was never a option)!
Cole Denton does disappoint you with his books. Grab your copy your tissues and read this book!

Cole has really grown as an author since I read his first book. He has really come out of his shell with this book, my personal opinion. Hollis is a character unlike any other Cole has created. Hollis is really the all American athlete who has supportive family and is always willing to help others. He's beyond selfless! What makes this book so unique is Hollis and his ability to shine as a MMA star but keeps his feet grounded and continues to keep his friendships strong. The emotions and feelings in this book are strong and intense. This book will knock you down!

Hollis "Ward" Hawkins

I am a huge fan of Cole Denton, and his writing. However, I have to admit that I was hesitant about this story. I'm not a fan of sports...at all. This book was so much fun to read! I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this book! Hollis has wanted to be a cage fighter since he was nine years old. This is the heartwarming and at times, heartbreaking story of his journey to make that dream come true. You will also see how kind, compassionate and caring he is. All in all, am awesome story. Definitely a five star read! Sorry, no spoilers.

Incredible!

As always, Cole spins a captivating tale with exceptionally well written characters you will fall in love with. Full of angst, love, brotherhood and humor, Cole will pull you in on page one and you will be invested until end. There is also the OMG moment that both excites you and causes you to curse him in the same breath, but it wouldn't be a Cole book without it. I already cannot wait for the next one.

Ok so I had a really hard time putting this down once I started it. This is my first read by Cole Denton and he held my attention the whole time. This book has a little bit of everything from dating to exploring to breakup, best friends, brother/family dynamics, following dreams and the ugliest of the ugly. My heart broke for Patrick and I’m so happy he has Hollis in his corner. I can’t wait for his book next. 🖤🥊🔥🥊🖤

This is again a great book by Cole Denton. I am just a sucker for his writing style. There were some heartbreaking, lol and hot AF pages to be read.
I loved Hollis family dynamics and how the brothers were towards each other.
Patricks story is heartbreaking, I did miss a little more of his story though, it’s not really needed for the story but I always love to read about stuff like that.
Totally recommend it and can’t wait for book 2 and 3 and even more 😇

Draining but awesome!!

Cole Denton.. you never seem to amaze me. Every time I get dragged into a book by you, I'm never disappointed. You always seem to tear my heart apart and mend it back together. This first book in the series was draining. I just luv the way you bring someone into a better situation and show them how to continue to be a better person. Keep up the great work.
On to book 2 in this series. If you're a Cole Denton fan. You won't be disappointed.

I was really anxious to read this book, knowing the quality of books that Cole puts out... And he did not disappoint. This book provided great stories, great characters and the want for more. I loved they way the chapters progressed in Hollis's timeline. Patrick's story broke my heart. He has found a place in it along side Ryan and Brandon. Really excited to read the next in the series.

I like the book itself. But the “dark MMA age gap romance series” was a bit confusing. I kept expecting to read about some tragic event about Hollis’ family. And now I understand the dark part was about Patrick. But age gap? Aren’t Hollis and Patrick the same age? Or will there be a new MC in the next book?

Cole Denton has done it again. He weaves these amazing stories that pull you in heart and soul. Half way through this book I was crying. He brings these characters to life and you want to swoop in a protect them (Patrick). But, in perfect Cole style, there is already this awesome character (Hollis) to stand up. Do the right thing. Be a wonderful human. One of my favorites lines was “I was the voice for those who hadn’t found their voice yet.” That was a perfect description for Hollis. I cannot wait for the next book.

Off The Charts

OMG this story is phenomenal. Hollis is a beast in and out of the cage. He is one character that is everything. Patrick is amazing. Dad, Mom, Morgan, and Chase tie it all together. I wish I could have read it in one day. But I am thrilled with the whole book. The writing and flow of this book is off the charts amazing. I beyond recommend this story.

Fantastic series starter!

Cole Denton is an absolute favorite author of mine and The Dragon once again proves why. With every book and series, Cole creates captivating storylines and characters I can’t help but fall in love with.
Hollis “The Dragon” Ward has an idyllic life and family, yet is completely grounded and relatable. Even as a teenager who’s been scouted and training for a future career in the MMA world, he’s got a heart of gold and looks out for others. He has a humble outlook on the opportunity he’s been given and focused ambition in spades.
His friend Patrick isn’t as lucky, hiding a terrible home life and struggling every day until Hollis and his family intervene. His friendship with Hollis is the glue piecing his life back together but his past is still haunting him. As the bond and comfort he finds with Hollis grows, their relationship becomes so much more than either expected just as Hollis’ MMA career starts to take off.
I’m completely in love with this story already and can’t wait for the next book of the series, The Throwaway!

This book…so many emotions!

I was excited to read this book because of the karate angle, but whoa…so much more to this story.

Familial love that draws you in and makes you smile and rejoice.

Familial dynamic that causes you to see red and scream.

And then there are the relationships: some full of love, some full of hate, some sex related.

Can’t wait for Book Two!

The Dragon

This is both a heartbreaking and heartwarming story of a young and upcoming fighter and his family.
Hollis from a young age was always looking out for everyone around him.
Which was how he became best friends with Patrick.
Patrick's homelife was gutwrenching. He was lucky to have Hollis and his family to support him.
A brilliant story, well worth 5 stars.
