This book carries on where Leviathan left off, with our young heros approaching the technically-neutral Ottoman Empire in a giant living airship in the middle of an alternate history WWI. Got it?
I never had sufficient time to sit down and read this through, which could easily be done in a few sittings, so I never felt like I had time to get into the story. A solid follow up to Leviathan, Behemoth picks up where the last book left off, which after a year or so can be hard to remember. The introduction of the Ottoman technology was really interesting, and when you read the afterward you can realize how much of the story is based on actual history. I enjoyed the second installment of the Leviathan Trilogy more than the first. There was more action, clever dialogue, unusual beasties, and tons of humor. Once again, Dylan/Deryn is my favorite character and I find myself muttering "barking spiders" to myself. I listened to the audio-Alan Cumming is a genius-but will go back through the book to enjoy the beautiful illustrations. This book was everything I had hoped for in a sequel and I am looking forward to the next installment.

I think I liked this one more than the first, Leviathan. The politics, alliances, and most secrets being told made for an interesting story. I liked the prominent role of Turkey in this book, too. I'm still not sure about those secret creatures that the scientist brought with her. I loved the Tesla cannon and the multi-racial walkers. Just neat ways that real history and Westerfeld's created world melded together.

Sequel to its steampunk predecessor Leviathan, part 2 of 3.
I do love the continuing scrappy derring-do of Midshipman Dylan, "Mr." Sharp and the new beastie Bovril.

My first steampunk book - loved it! The descriptions are amazing and I love the building of Alex and Dylan's characters. I couldn't wait to read book 2 when I was done!
