So you are gonna tell me that the parents leave their children for years, everyone is aware of it but no one calls child services? Why? Why does no one call the child services? Everyone in that city hated Violet’s family because of their snobby attitude so I thought, why would they leave them be? Oh, and the insta love almost killed me. I hate that trope so much.
The worst part of the book (insta love aside) are the characters, more precisely their non-characterization. -Sunshine… the vapid, flirty friend that makes the protagonist look better by comparison… horrible. The portrayal of Sunshine upsets me so much, the only thing she does in this book is hooking up with Luke, Violet's twin, even though she knows he's seeing another girl too. Sunshine gets called a 'whore,' beat up, terrified and more. What’s bad is that the reader never gets a sense that there's anything more than that to her. That was REALLY disturbing. -Jack’s character has such unnatural behavior. -Neely, River’ brother, is just useful to let us know what River has done in the past. that's enough, then it stops being useful and becomes superfluous -On the other hand Freddie, Violet's grandmother, was the only interesting character and she was dead... her backstory was compelling even if useless for the purposes of the story. -I loved the aesthetics behind Violet’s character. She is an old soul who likes to wear her dead grandmother’s dresses and loves to read a good book. She’s an artist and a coffee aficionado. She often feels misunderstood and lacking a connection with her twin brother. Even in this case, however, as for what concerns Jack, his reactions are often not credible. Sometimes she is passive and lets things happen around her without actually trying to do something. plus her sage is heavy and the way she belittles her "friend" Sunshine is demeaning. -Luke’s character was the worst; he was misogenous, uses women as if they were toys, he is self-centered and in general his way of doing things makes me sick. I hated the parts where he was present and even more the parts where he was with Sunshine. -About Riven… I kinda liked his power and that he was losing his control over it, that’s it.
What I actually liked was that the atmosphere in the book worked really well and was consistent throughout the story. The writing was occasionally lovely and it did help with keeping up the atmosphere and the feeling of timelessness the setting had. The gothic/horror elements were well balanced. I really appreciated the evocative style of the author, that’s why I don't understand why she did not characterize her characters better and in particular why she did not commit herself more in world-building which in my opinion is almost incomplete.
What a waste of potential…
P.S. How much can I love this cover? My gosh, it’s so gorgeous ...more

First of all the protagonist, Cas. His "I'm a ghost hunter and you are all stupid" attitude didn't drive me crazy. On the contrary, it made me very nervous. That arrogance of his which he maintains constant throughout the first half of the book is UNBEARABLE. Really. Luckily then Thomas, Carmel and Anna are introduced and this aspect of him smooths out. The friendship between Thomas and Cas was the one that I appreciated the most and that was most described.
The second thing that I really didn't like was the "Horror-Gotico" part of the novel, mainly I didn't like the total absence of it. Yes, some scenes in theory are disturbing but the way they are described and the lack of atmosphere that leads you to feel anxiety and terror is not there. I'm not expecting a Stephen King's horror novel, but something vaguely scary. it's not enough to have Cas says that something is "terrible" to make me tremble. It doesn't work like this...
The most successful character, however, is Anna, beautiful story and I particularly appreciated the way in which she "transforms".
I was often bothered by the scurril language used by Cas, I understand that he is 16,or something near that age, but still, there is a limit to everything....more
