"I used to see Sleeping Beauty as my wildest, most aspirational fantasy - a dying girl who didn't die, a tragedy turned into a romance. But suddenly I saw her as my mere reflection: a girl with a shitty story. A girl whose choices were stolen from her."
Summary:
Today is a special day. It's Zinnia Gray's twenty-first birthday.
What makes it so special?
It's the last birthday she'll ever have.
When Zinnia was young, she was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called Generalized Roseville Malady, named after her hometown in Ohio and caused by a corporate environmental accident. GRM is largely unstudied with no cure. But the one thing doctors are sure of is that no one with GRM has made it to twenty-two.
With an incurable disease that only leads to premature death, Zinnia became obsessed with Sleeping Beauty. She felt that this fairytale reflected her bleak story but turned into something hopeful and beautiful.
To make Zinnia's last birthday special, her best friend Charm throws a surprise Sleeping Beauty-themed party, complete with a tower and a spinning wheel. But when Zinnia pricks her finger, she finds herself falling through worlds that belong to thousands of other girls reaching out towards thousands of spinning wheels. When one of the beauties asks for help, Zinnia is thrust into the world of Princess Primrose of Perceforest, who is just as desperate to escape her fate.
My Thoughts:
I love this feminist take on Sleeping Beauty, the link between fairy-tales and sci-fi multiverse, the LGBTQ representation, and the wonderful message about taking back control of your own narrative. I honestly had no idea what to expect going into this and was pleasantly surprised!
The story concept is so creative! Sleeping Beauty really is the worst princess story, full of female subjugation, passivity, and even abuse, so for Alix E. Harrow to turn it into something empowering and uplifting is incredible!! It's not all rainbows and butterflies, but it's real, honest, and raw. This is the Sleeping Beauty story we should be told!
And the multiverse angle - genius!! I love stories dealing with alternative universes, but I've never read one about fairytales, so it was refreshing and exciting to me.
Zinnia is a badass and someone you can't help but root for. The girl has gone through life knowing her expiration date, which prevented her from truly living in some ways. But once she's in the alternative Sleeping Beauty universe, she finds a reason to keep trying to save herself and fight for others. Watching Zinnia's character development was a real treat!
Even though the story has some heavier themes, it was light, funny, and exciting! I love Zinnia's cursing, her banter with Charm, and her friendship with Primrose. And while the ending isn't a typical Happily Ever After, it's empowering. I'd love to read about more of Zinnia's adventures!
I did NOT see those twists and turns coming! We all know the story of Sleeping Beauty, but this retelling will keep you at the edge of your seat. I absolutely loved the storyline Alix E. Harrow gave the 'villain' as well as the bittersweet ending.
Bonus, the book is filled with beautiful illustrations. They added a fairytale storybook quality that only enhanced my reading experience!
While I did enjoy this story, my 3.5 rating was due to some lulls in the story, some immature (not quite the right word I'm looking for but oh well) dialogue, and the fact I don't think fairytale retellings are my jam. But I rounded up to 4-stars on Goodreads because it was well-written and has a creative storyline with a wonderful message. So if you do like fairytale retellings, you definitely should check it out!

The first time we see Megan is in Having The Barbarian's Baby and I didn't like her then. Maybe it's because she was whiny from pregnancy. So I was ready to give her a chance in Barbarian's Treasure, but she annoys me even more now.
I don't get her fear of getting kicked out of the tribe. She even mentions no one has ever said anything like that, but for some reason, this unwarranted fear drives her. Ruby Dixon tries to relate this fear to Megan's past experiences on Earth where she felt unwanted or rejected, but I didn't buy it.
Megan does say she was a horse girl. . . so maybe that's part of her problem. LOL JK ...more
The only reason I'm giving this 2-stars is because Ruby Dixon is a great writer and story-teller.
First off, the sex stor2 ⭐ I did not like this story
The only reason I'm giving this 2-stars is because Ruby Dixon is a great writer and story-teller.
First off, the sex storyline is basically if Belle f*cked the beast in Beauty and The Beast. Gren is more animal than the big blue guys. He has enormous fangs and a cat-like nose and fur all over. It was gross visualizing how him and Willa mate. They can't really kiss so they lick each other’s chins/faces. YUCK! I'm sorry but no. Let's be honest, we're here for the smut and I hated that aspect of the story, so it gets a low rating.
Second, I hate Willa more than any of the other female protagonist in the IPB universe. Her reasoning makes zero sense and her mistrust annoyed the sh*t out of me. She was so mad at how everyone tied up Gren but didn't see where the tribe was coming from? It was just weird she could empathize with him so much but not the rest of the clan.
I think this will be my last IPB/Icehome book for a while. I think I need a break.

Idk why but I wasn't into Veronica and Ashtar's story. He was so pushy but in a selfish way for 75% of the story. And I definitely prefer the big blue guy's anatomy over the dragon. Not sure a cat-like tongue (which btw cats have barbed tongues) and claws is really suitable for sensitive human lady parts. I'm just saying.
4.5 ⭐ Ariana and Zolaya are now one of my favorite IPB couples.

I am obsessed with the story. Lauren and Marisol (2 of the new humans who woke up from the slavers ship) accidentally get stranded on the volcanic island across the sea. To their surprise, they meet and resonate to alien men that can camouflage - one even has four arms. But they are not safe. The island is a caldera and if the increasing amounts of earthquakes is any indication, the volcano is going to erupt once more. Lauren must find a way convince the few aliens who remain on the island to cross the sea, back to her tribe.
The romance was good, but nothing crazy. Sure, her mate having four hands automatically makes it different from the other stories, but it wasn't super sexy IMO. At least he has a spur and massive d0ng. ...more

I thought Summer's character was inconsistent. She is a nervous, sheltered 22 year old virgin but the way she talks about sex makes her sounds like someone who's confident and has plenty of experience. Also, her constant ramblings were annoying. I just skimmed them.
