...more

Viimase 2 nädalaga lugesin ma läbi ülejäänud 750 lk ja ausalt öeldes on see raamat märkimisväärne. The world and the characters are incredibly intriguing, and the descriptions are gruesome and appalling. I thoroughly enjoyed this book's literary practices and themes. What I didn't enjoy were the politics of this book. It's absolute gibberish, Orwell who called himself a socialist completely makes up a world where socialism exists and depicts it as badly as possible. I also didn't enjoy the way he wrote women. Julia was overly sexualized, and Winston dreamed of raping her and ruining Julia. I don't understand why this is in the book, it seems completely irrelevant and is just off-putting....more

The ideas that are brought up are concise but in the end lack any meaningful practicality. The book almost in a way seems to think that the ruling class won't stop the advancing of socialism and if we teach people enough stuff and change their thinking then we can vote our way towards socialism. Examples of how this hasn't worked or has been tried to dismantle are Cuba and Chile, or even Vietnam and China. I enjoyed the chapters about UBI (unconditional basic income), and especially the chapter about why be anticapitalist. Good book for a beginner but in the end lacks real world acknowledgement....more
