This paper reports on several experiments using non-commercial imaging tools and their behavior when encountering faulty sectors on a hard drive.
Contagious errors happen when faulty sectors on a drive cause a disk imaging tool to fail to read good sectors.
Although the drive may contain bad sectors, there still exists the possibility that potential data of evidential value may still reside in bad sectors.
