It’s been more than three months since the subsidence in the hill town of Joshimath, Uttarakhand, made headlines. Deep cracks appeared in houses, roads and fields --- triggering anger and anguish among the residents, who had been alerting authorities about the cave-ins. Many warnings by experts went unheeded, and the built-up areas increased manifold. The subsidence in January rendered people homeless, throwing their lives out of gear. The small town, which came up on loose soil, deposited by landslides, blatantly ignored the principles of nature as it allowed large-scale constructions. It failed to build around nature, and preserve its rich ecosystem. The so-called development has come with a big cost — ecological damage and risk to lives.
