Everything You Need to Know About Oahu’s Turtle Beach
What Is Turtle Beach?
Laniakea Beach is known by many locals and visitors alike as “Turtle Beach,” and there’s a good reason for that. This beach is widely recognized as one of the best places on Oahu to see wild Green sea turtles! Located on the North Shore in the small town of Haleiwa, Turtle Beach offers breathtaking views, plenty of sun, and once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounters.
Local Tips: What to Know Before You Visit
Getting to Laniakea Beach
To get to Turtle Beach, take Kamehameha Highway until you’re just outside of Haleiwa. Though a popular destination, Laniakea Beach can be tough to spot. There are no signs indicating that you have arrived; you’ll want to be on the lookout for cars parked on the side of the road. You’ll notice the cars once you’re near Pohaku Loa Way, where you’ll also see an array of residential homes. Between two of these homes, you’ll notice a path. Follow it and you will have arrived! Just be sure to use caution when crossing the busy roads surrounding Turtle Beach, especially if there are children with you.
What to Do at the Beach
Swimming is not recommended at Turtle Beach, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a must-see spot! The big draw here is the turtles themselves, and you can spot them in several places along the rocky shore during a visit. The creatures swim, sun themselves, and make delicate nests here, so be sure to only look, not touch. Wading is allowed at the beach, but requires water shoes with thick soles (there are not only rocks beneath the water’s surface, but also spiky sea urchins). The waves can also be strong, so use caution with children as they near the water.
When to Visit
Summer is without a doubt the best time to visit Turtle Beach. This is because these majestic sea creatures are most active in warmer, gentler water. During the cooler months, the waves become stronger and less hospitable for the turtles. The best time of day to view the turtles is between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., but just before sunset is a good time to visit, too.
