#Zulum Pledges to Clear Pension, Gratuity Backlogs Before 2027 Exit

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has vowed to settle all outstanding pension and gratuity liabilities before the end of his tenure in 2027. The governor made the commitment while announcing the approval of ₦8 billion for the payment of backlogs owed to retired primary school teachers and other civil servants.

Speaking at the Government House council chamber in Maiduguri on Wednesday, Zulum reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to addressing financial obligations to retirees. “Insh’Allah, I will clear all the backlog of gratuities before I leave office in 2027,” he said.

Progress in Pension Payments

The newly approved ₦8 billion will cover liabilities accrued between 2019 and 2021. This builds on previous efforts by Zulum’s administration, which began with ₦3 billion disbursed in 2019 to clear gratuities for 1,684 retirees who left the civil service between 2013 and 2019.

In 2020, over ₦12 billion was allocated for retirees from both state and local government services, covering the period between 2013 and 2017.

Cumulative Payments

Since assuming office in 2019, Zulum’s administration has paid approximately ₦25 billion to settle pension and gratuity backlogs for retirees across the state and local governments.

This consistent commitment to honoring pension obligations demonstrates Zulum’s focus on improving the welfare of retirees, alleviating financial burdens, and ensuring that their years of service are rewarded.

Looking Ahead

As Governor Zulum aims to fulfill this pledge before his tenure concludes, his administration continues to earn praise for prioritizing the welfare of civil servants and retirees in Borno State. The governor’s actions underscore his broader commitment to fiscal responsibility and social equity.
