Human remains found by a pair of duck hunters in Alexander County remained unidentified as of Friday.
Alexander County Sheriff Chad Pennell said the remains, found on Jan. 13, were sent to a forensic anthropologist for analysis.
Pennell said it appeared the remains were in the area for a while. He did not elaborate on the condition of the remains.
Forensic anthropologists specialize in analyzing hard tissues such as bones, according to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.
The remains were discovered in a wooded area along the 1600 block of N.C. Highway 16 North in Taylorsville.
The death is still under investigation.
