The five-month signature campaign seeking for an upgrade of Mawsynram block to a civil sub-division conducted by the Khasi Students Union (KSU) of Balat, Lawbah and Sawsymper in collaboration with the KSU South West Khasi Hills district, concluded today.
The KSU has also announced plans to intensify its agitation, asserting that the upgrade is needed as Mawsynram is one of the oldest blocks in the state.
Circle president Bonsen Snaitang criticised the state government for not listening to the demand of the people and warned of strong protests.
It may be mentioned that Mawsynram is in East Khasi Hills but is on the border of South West Khasi Hills. It was carved out in 1962.
According to the KSU, the upgrade will benefit 164 villages and a population of over 54,000 with a literacy rate of 58 per cent.
