Data Usage

Ways in which we may use your data

Change how we communicate with you

We will only communicate with you in the way that you wish. You can change how you would like to be contacted at any time by emailing [email protected], phoning 01392 688020 or online here.

Marketing and Communications

We will use the details you give us to tell you about the work we do and the services we can provide. We would also like to update you on how your support is helping, provide advice and useful information, and tell you about events and activities that you may be interested in.

Emails and texts

If you have given us your email address and consent to email you, we will use this to send you updates and marketing information, as this is a cost-effective way to communicate with you. All our marketing emails will include an unsubscribe link so that you can change your mind at any time.

If you provide us with your mobile phone number, we may use this for marketing purposes or to contact you with last minute event updates. There will always be an opportunity to send a reply text to stop these.

Postal marketing

If we have your name and address, we will use this to send you newsletters and other information from time to time, relying on our legitimate business interest to do so. In all our communications we will let you know how to stop receiving this information should you ever wish to do so. (Please note that you may still receive a mailing after you have asked us to stop, as it is possible other mailings were already in progress).

Twice a year we send our data to a data cleaning company, to fulfil our legal requirement to ensure our data is as accurate as possible. This helps us to keep addresses up to date, remove people who have died from our lists, and to check against the mailing preference register.

Online advertising

We use social media to reach more people and make them aware of our work and our need to raise funds in order to be able to deliver our service.  We adhere to the rules of each site, and we will never upload any of our supporters’ information.

We use online analytics to identify people via their online behaviours and interests, and we analyse the demographics of supporters on our social media pages in order to identify similar people in a specific geographical area.

Targeting communications

We use the data we hold about you in order to improve our communications with you. We do this through ‘profiling’ which means we use the data we hold on our fundraising database to analyse characteristics or behaviour patterns.  We believe we have a legitimate interest in using this data to make predictions or assessments to try to ensure that we do not contact you too often, or we may use your postcode and other demographic information to send you information about events, activities or services that are specific to your area.  We may also engage with specialist companies and use software and predictive analytics to achieve this. This profiling enables us to fundraise more cost-effectively and allows us to be more efficient in our use of resources.

Analysing and researching our supporters

We sometimes compare our database to national data geodemographic information (e.g. Experian’s Mosaic profiles). We do this to understand the type of people that support us and to make appropriate requests to people who may be able and willing to give additional support, volunteer for us or take part in an event.

By using demographic information, coupled with an exploration of how you have supported us in the past, levels of donation you have made and how long you have had a relationship with us, we will try to identify people who may be in a position to support us with a larger gift.  Where this is the case, we may gather further information from publicly available sources to understand you better.  These sources may include internet search engine results, public registers such as Companies House or Land Registry, property sites such as Zoopla or Rightmove, open postings on social media, media articles or rich lists.  This enables us to approach specific supporters personally in a way that is in line with their interests and individual capacity to give. If you would prefer that your information is not used in this way, please email [email protected].
