Third Culture Bakery Supports the Queer and BIPOC Community
The pandemic has created challenges for people worldwide, and the crisis has hit close to home. We’ve seen how difficult it’s been for our friends and chosen family as they’ve struggled emotionally, physically, and financially.
At Third Culture Bakery, we feel fortunate in so many ways. We have maintained our business and our health through these difficult times. We hope our donations to a Bay Area emergency relief fund for Queer and BIPOC community members offer the help family members need to get back on their feet.
Third Culture Bakery Supports Ukrainian Refugees
Many of us have no experience with the traumas of war within the boundaries of our home countries. It’s hard for us to imagine how displacement must feel, not knowing if you’ll ever see home again, yet, this is the reality for the 13 million Ukrainians forced to leave their homes in the first four months of the Russian invasion.
In April 2022, Third Culture Bakery celebrated its fifth anniversary. It was a tremendous milestone for us, and we wanted to use the opportunity to do something positive. Our hearts go out to the people of Ukraine, so we again decided to bring our community together to lend a helping hand.
We held a family drag show to raise money. We donated the money to the World Central Kitchen to help this fantastic organization in its efforts to feed Ukrainian refugees. If you haven’t heard of WCF, we recommend you check them out and support them if you can.
Third Culture Bakery Supports the Asian and Pacific Islander Community
In August of 2021, National Public Radio reported a staggering 9,081 incidents of AAPI violence in the U.S. between March 2020 and June 2021. We strongly feel that hate and violence are never justified, and nobody should have to live in fear because of their skin color.
To that end, we felt we had to do something to help the AAPI community feel safer. The elderly among us are especially vulnerable, so when we started looking for ways Third Culture Bakery could help, we decided to create and distribute safety kits to Asian and Pacific Islander seniors.
Between May 2021 and May 2022, we distributed more than 22,000 safety kits to AAPI seniors in large cities such as San Francisco, Chicago, Portland, Denver, and New York. As with any successful endeavor, we couldn’t have done this without the help of family, friends, and volunteers.
