On the evening of July 23rd, 2013, thunderstorms formed in the Bay of Fundy. Overnight, the storms moved east towards Halifax. At 9:46 AM the following morning, Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the city. At 10:14 AM, it was updated to a tornado warning as a funnel cloud was spotted near Halifax.

At 10:19 AM, the funnel cloud touched down near the city. It tore through the city at high end F2 strength, damaging houses and businesses. It reached F3 strength as it ripped through downtown, blowing windows out of many office buildings and tossing vehicles. It also killed 4 people in its destructive path.
