I am a Composition Tutor at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, working with students aged 9 to 18. I’m also a mentor on the Rushworth Young Composers Scheme run by Liverpool Philharmonic working with young composers aged 14 to 18, and I regularly work with students at Calday Grange Grammar School on the composition element of A-level Music. I have an enhanced check from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
I love sharing my enthusiasm for music and for the compositional process. I judge how my lessons should run based on what compositions the student has already written, what their own musical preferences and enthusiasms are, what they hope to achieve with their composition, and what timescale they have to achieve that.
I’m not tied to any particular compositional method, and have many strategies for helping students find inspiration, get started, decide on a structure, and continue their composition to the best of their abilities. I personally use the notation program Sibelius but I’m happy to work with students using any software, or none.
I am available for composition lessons both in person and online, using a platform such as Zoom. My rate until 31 December 2025 is £40 per hour. Lessons could be on a one-off or a regular basis. I teach both young people and adults, at any stage of their compositional journey.
