Swarovski Crystal Studs & Spikes

After growing plates upon sectored plates, I ended this snowflake by placing spikes on the ends. It doesn't take much to change the way an ice crystal grows. The large, outer plates were produced by keeping the temperature at a constant -17 C (+1 F) with a steady, gentle flow of slightly humid air blowing onto the crystal. The spikes were added by changing the temperature just a bit, to -15 C (+5 F). It took 50 minutes to grow the large outer plates, then 8 minutes more for the spikes…
