Delhi L-G visits Okhla landfill site, rues ‘static’ rate of waste disposal; AAP hits back
The AAP hit back, saying the BJP did nothing during its 15-year tenure at the helm of MCD and the mountains of garbage (at landfills) continued to grow unchecked.
Lieutenant Governor (L-G) V K Saxena on Monday visited Okhla landfill site after receiving complaints from resident welfare and market welfare associations about garbage piled on city roads, a note from his office said.
Saxena expressed “disappointment” over the “static” and in some cases “declining” rate of solid waste disposal at landfill sites like Okhla, Bhalswa and Ghazipur, the note claimed. “It came to light during the visit that the average disposal, which had gone up to about 22,000 metric tonnes (MT) per day, had come down to about 20,000 MT per day, while Saxena had envisaged a system wherein the disposal goes up to 10 lakh MT per month… over 33,000 metric ton per day,” it said.
“The L-G directed the MCD, where the AAP is in power, to complete the process of disposing of all the 30 lakh MT of garbage in one single year,” the note added. It said that work of bioremediation was being carried out at the rate of 4,000-5,000 MT per day at Okhla landfill and after November 28, the work was stopped.
The AAP hit back, saying the BJP did nothing during its 15-year tenure at the helm of MCD and the mountains of garbage (at landfills) continued to grow unchecked. “They have tried to obstruct our work at every step. Despite this, we have reduced 80% of the legacy waste at Bhalswa site in just two years, and work at the Okhla is progressing at a rapid pace.”
