Fire breaks out at Mumbai building, 11 admitted to various hospitals

Fire breaks out at Mumbai building, 11 admitted to various hospitals

A fire broke out at a building in the MHADA colony in Mumbai’s Byculla early on Thursday morning. Officials of the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) said 11 people suffered from suffocation due to the fumes and were rushed to various hospitals.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) disaster management cell, the fire, classified as a level 1, broke out around 3.43 am at the building situated inside the New Hind Mill compound at Rambhau Bhogle Marg. The flames were doused by 7.20 am. Officials said all the affected are now stable.

MFB said the fire broke out inside the electrical meter cabin but remained confined within the electrical installation. Some scrap materials present in the electrical duct also caught fire. The officials said the combustible items intensified the blaze.

“It was an old building, therefore, the flames spread smoothly through the ducts and the corridors got engulfed in smoke which led to suffocation of the victims,” said an official.

Out of the eleven victims, nine of them have been admitted to the KEM hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. The injured have been identified as Lakshmi Raut (70), Archana More (75), Pranay Tambole (28), Archana More, Mumtaz (60), Paravatibai Tambole (85), Abhish (36), Vishal Vijay More (34) and Lata Tambole (67).

Meanwhile, Razaq Khan (80) has been admitted to Nair hospital, while Savita Karade (48) has been admitted to the J J Hospital.

Bhausaheb Kiwale, his business associate and distant relative who was upset over a loan dispute and a taunting WhatsApp status, ordered the killing. Earlier Thopte had helped Kiwale secure a loan on a flat. The assailants were arrested within 24 hours and the main suspect is in custody.
