Ever since the first part of Ponniyin Selvan was released, many fans have been demanding the makers release the song “Aga Naga”, which plays briefly when Vallavarayan Vanthiyathevan (Karthi) meets Kundhavai (Trisha) in Palaiyaarai… the romantic boat scene, remember? So, the song is finally here, and it lives up to all the hype the teaser from the first part had created.

Throughout the day Trisha and Karthi were interacting on Twitter as Kundhavai and Vanthiyathevan to promote the song. On the other hand, the makers have been hyping it up for the past couple of days with the release of a poster, which featured a blindfolded Vanthiyathevan and an armed Kundhavai.

The scene could be from the point in the story where Vanthiyathevan finally returns to Palaiyaarai with the news that Ponniyin Selvan is very much alive and is getting treated by Buddhist monks. By this time, the Chola kingdom is rife with rumours that Vanthiyathevan is a spy who has double-crossed both Kundhavai and Nandhini (Aishwarya Rai). So, he might be in for some harsh treatment from Ilaiyapiratti Kundhavai Devi. However, we know that his ‘Uyir’ always belongs to Kundhavai.

“Aga Naga” is about Kundhavai’s yearning for Vanthiyathevan as she waits for his return from Lanka. Debutant lyricist Ilango Krishnan has hit it out of the park with Ponniyin Selvan songs by bringing to the fore some of the archaic but beautiful words of Tamil.

So here goes the song:

The first part of Ponniyin Selvan ended with the titular hero and our beloved Vanthiyathevan getting drowned in the Indian ocean. However, we know that help is on the way as Oomai Rani has jumped into the ocean to save the prince. The suspense is rather about the identity of the ageing queen, who looks like the older version of Nandhini.

All such questions will be answered on April 28, when PS 2 will hit screens. Directed by Mani Ratnam, Ponniyin Selvan films are based on the novel series of the same name, written by Kalki Krishnamoorthy in the 70s. Vikram, Sarathkumar, Lal, Prakash Raj, and Parthiban also star in the period drama.
