Apple to ‘clarify’ AI-generated summaries after BBC flags factual errors
An Apple Intelligence-generated summary wrongfully claimed that tennis player Rafael Nadal had come out as gay.
The notifications summarised by Apple Intelligence on iPhones and other devices will be undergoing a small change.
“A software update in the coming weeks will further clarify when the text being displayed is summarization provided by Apple Intelligence,” the iPhone-maker was quoted as saying by The BBC.
This comes days after the British media organisation flagged to Apple that its AI feature had rewritten the headline of a BBC report to falsely suggest that Luigi Mangione, the UnitedHealthcare shooting suspect, had died by suicide.
The BBC also cited other examples of factual errors in Apple’s AI summaries that was launched in beta in the UK in December last year.
The media outlet claimed that a summary generated Apple Intelligence incorrectly named the winner of the PDC World Darts Championship before the event began. Another Apple Intelligence-generated summary wrongfully said that tennis player Rafael Nadal had come out as gay.
“These AI summarisations by Apple do not reflect – and in some cases completely contradict – the original BBC content,” the report said.
In response, Apple also told the BBC that users can turn off AI-generated summaries or enable it only for specific apps by going to Settings > Notifications > Summarize Notifications.
For context, Apple Intelligence features are only available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the iPhone 16 series as well as devices with M1 and later.
