Deva Review: Shahid Kapoor Shines But Is the Film Good Enough?

‘Deva’ starring Shahid Kapoor has finally been released today and received so many mixed reactions from viewers on social media. The film initially goes off on a fast pace first half where Shahid portrays most of his aggressiveness as an outlaw cop. The second half though focuses more on emotional depth and story building that can well and truly create misconceived notions.
Twist and turns filled the movie can go either way to an audience. For some, they could be enjoyable twists, the others feel annoyed with it. Several parts of the movie seem to drag, making many viewers lose focus. The action sequences were not well delivered nor was the sound design that brings forth the intensity of the scenes.
Shahid Kapoor playing an ultra aggressive cop is fairly decent but goes nowhere near where it could be. His performance in the film is edgy as he is ruthlessly brutal within the grey areas of the police force. Nevertheless, one hoped for something dynamic and it felt underwhelming with Pooja Hegde essaying a fearsome investigative journalist being another disappointment as her predictability fails to make any impression among the audience.
It’s a movie based on a fearless yet flawed cop. Deva is the character who does not think twice about over exercising force to an extent that he pushes a gun into a woman’s mouth. His swag and no filter attitude make it unique, fun and sometimes entertaining to watch.
In many ways, Deva is like the rebellious cousin of Singham with a blend of intensity and style.
Moments of bonding between Shahid’s character and his peers including Pravessh Rana and Pavail Gulati really shine through.
However, the film fails on female characters as Hegde and Kubbra Sait have very little screen time and make little impact.
Though the climax may not match the brilliance of its Malayalam original “Deva” still offers enough to keep the audience engaged especially with Shahid Kapoor’s captivating performance.
