BBC One‘s long-running detective drama Death in Paradise returns for its 13th season on Sunday 4 February 2024 at 9pm.

Ralf Little reprises his starring role as Detective Inspector (DI) Neville Parker in the fictional and slightly murder-ridden Caribbean island of Saint Marie, alongside several series regulars and a host of guest stars in each episode.

The season opener, which is also the show’s 100th episode, will see Don Warrington’s Commissioner Selwyn Patterson celebrating 50 years of police service before being shot by a mysterious assassin and left fighting for his life.

Who is in the cast of series 13 of Death in Paradise?

Ralf Little

Formerly of sitcoms The Royle Family and Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, Little has starred as DI Neville Parker since 2020. His on-screen Death in Paradise character, Neville, enters Sunday’s episode still reeling from the dramatic betrayal of his girlfriend, Sophie, last season.

The English actor followed Ben Miller (seasons 1-3), Kris Marshall (seasons 3-6) and Ardal O’Hanlon (seasons 6-9) as frontman of the show, which kicked off in 2011.

Don Warrington

The only remaining original cast member, Warrington is back as Commissioner Selwyn Patterson.

Aside from his role in Death in Paradise, Warrington – who was given an MBE in 2008 – is best known for playing Philip Smith in 1970s ITV sitcom Rising Damp.

Where is Death in Paradise filmed?

Death in Paradise is filmed in Guadeloupe, an archipelago of more than 12 islands in the Caribbean that are collectively an overseas region of France.

Guadeloupe is located in the Lesser Antilles, in the western Atlantic ocean.

The show itself is set largely in the fictional town of Honoré, on the similarly fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie. This imaginary island is supposed to be about a 10th of the size of ‘neighbouring’ Guadeloupe.

Some of Death in Paradise‘s key on-screen locations do actually exist, but others are made purely for the show.

Deshaies

The real name of the town fictitiously called Honoré is Deshaies, with several of its attractions featuring regularly in the programme.

Deshaies is on the northwest coast of Guadeloupe’s Basse-Terre Island.

The show’s police station is actually the Presbytery attached to the church of St Peter and St Paul in Deshaies.

Le Madras

‘Catherine’s Bar’ in Death in Paradise is actually a restaurant in Deshaies called Le Madras.

Anse de la Perle Beach

The beach where the iconic detectives’ shack is located is real and is called Anse de la Perle Beach – however, the shack itself is not a regular feature there, and is instead rebuilt every season.

When does Death in Paradise start on BBC1?

Death in Paradise airs on BBC One at 9pm on Sunday 4 February, with its season 13 opener also marking the show’s 100th episode.

That marks a departure from the show’s usual Friday evening airing slot.

After their respective initial weekly television releases, each of the season’s eight episodes will then be available to catch up with online on BBC iPlayer.
