ASK the expert
Q:How long do pool chemicals last? Can they go off?
A: Pool chemicals like chlorine, algaecides and pH balancers have varying shelf lives — typically between one and five years if stored properly. Different forms also have different lives — while chlorine tablets and granules can last up to five years, liquid has a shorter shelf life. To tell if your chemicals are ‘off’:
1. Check the expiry date — most chemicals are labelled by the manufacturer.
2. Storage conditions — ensure chemicals are properly stored in a cool dry place. High temps and humidity can degrade chemicals.
3. Physical appearance — check for changes in colour or texture, which may indicate degradation.
4. Odour — strong, unusual smells can indicate a change in composition.
5. Effectiveness — if the usual dosages aren’t delivering the desired results, your chemicals may have been compromised. Always store chemicals in the original containers and be sure that seals are tight. Keep in a wellventilated area away from heat sources. If it doubt, replace old chemicals rather than take any risks. For more expert advice, email your pool and outdoor living questions to [email protected].

Poolside storage
AVOID THE MESS WITH THESE STYLISH POOLSIDE STORAGE IDEAS.
When summer comes around and the pool beckons, poolside quickly becomes a hive of activity. If towels, toys, floats and other accessories are turning your space into a chaotic mess, try some of these fun and functional ideas to bring some organisation back.
HOOKS: THE UNSUNG HEROES
The simplest ideas are often the best. Hooks are incredibly versatile and can be used in numerous ways around the pool. Install a series of sturdy hooks on an exterior wall or fence to keep towels off the ground and within easy reach. Opt for hooks in vibrant colours or fun shapes to add a playful touch to your poolside decor. If you’re looking for something more sophisticated, consider wrought iron or brushed metal hooks that complement the style of your home’s exterior.
For a more creative approach, repurpose a vintage coat rack or a set of antler hooks. These can serve as eye-catching focal points while providing ample hanging space for towels and wet swimsuits. If you have kids, designate a lower set of hooks for them to use, encouraging them to keep their own towels organised.
HATSTANDS: GET AHEAD OF THE MESS
Hatstands are a stylish and practical addition to any poolside area. These freestanding structures offer multiple hooks and arms, perfect for hanging towels, hats and even pool bags. Choose a hatstand made from weather-resistant materials such as teak, powder-coated metal or plastic to ensure it withstands the elements.
Position your hatstand somewhere that offers easy access but don’t forget fencing regulations — be sure you aren’t creating opportunity for climbing on or near the pool fence or gate. To get a cohesive look, choose a hatstand that matches your outdoor furniture or complements the colour scheme of your poolside decor. If you have a larger pool area, or lots of towels and toys, placing multiple hatstands around the space will help prevent overcrowding and ensure every item has a spot.
BASKETS AND BINS: STYLISH STORAGE SOLUTIONS
Baskets and bins are excellent for corralling smaller pool toys, sunscreen, goggles and other accessories. Large wicker-style baskets offer a natural, beachy vibe, while colourful plastic bins give a more playful look. Label each basket or bin with contents to make it easier to find what you need and to be sure everything is in its right space.
Place baskets and bins under a covered patio or a designated storage area near the pool. For added convenience, choose storage containers with handles or wheels so they can be easily moved as needed. If you have an outdoor shelving unit, use it to store baskets and bins, keeping everything neatly organised, off the ground and out of the weather.
FLOATING SHELVES: FUNCTIONAL AND FUN
Floating shelves are a fantastic way to add storage without taking up valuable floor space. Install a few floating shelves on an exterior wall to create a convenient spot for storing towels, pool toys and decorative items. For a cohesive look, choose shelves that match the style and colour of your home’s exterior and your poolside furniture.
Consider adding a few decorative touches — potted plants and lanterns will create a visually appealing display. You can also use decorative boxes or baskets on the shelves to keep smaller items organised and out of sight.
OUTDOOR CABINETS: SLEEK AND SECURE
For a more permanent storage solution, consider installing outdoor cabinets. Weather-resistant units will provide ample storage space for towels, toys and other poolside essentials while keeping everything protected from the elements. Choose
cabinets with adjustable shelves to accommodate items of varying sizes and look for units with lockable doors for added security.
Position outdoor cabinets near the pool or in a shaded area to keep them cool and out of direct sunlight. If you’re feeling creative, painting the cabinets in a fun, bold
colour will add a pop of personality to your poolside area.
TOY HAMMOCKS: A SWINGING IDEA
Toy hammocks are a playful and practical solution for storing pool toys. Netted hammocks can be hung on a fence, wall or between two posts to
create a designated spot for keeping toys off the ground and out of the way. Choose a brightly coloured hammock to add a fun, whimsical touch to your poolside decor.
To make it easy for kids to access and put away their toys, hang the hammock at a height they can reach. You can also use multiple hammocks to separate different types of toys, such as inflatables, diving sticks and water guns. This not only keeps things organised but also makes it easier to find the toys you want to use.
STORAGE BENCHES: COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE
Benches with hidden storage are a versatile addition to any poolside area. These multi-functional pieces provide a comfortable seating option while offering hidden storage space for towels, toys and other accessories. Choose a bench made
from weather-resistant materials such as teak, resin or aluminium to ensure it holds up to the elements.
Position the bench near the pool or in a shaded seating area for easy access — be mindful not to create a climbing opportunity. Add outdoor cushions and throw pillows in
coordinating colours and patterns. The hidden storage compartment can be used to store extra towels, pool floats or even pool cleaning supplies, keeping everything neatly out of sight.
REPURPOSED FURNITURE: CREATIVE AND UNIQUE
Repurposing furniture is a fun and eco-friendly way to add unique storage solutions to your poolside area. An old ladder can be transformed into a stylish towel rack, while a vintage dresser can be used to store pool toys and accessories. Look for pieces that are sturdy and weather-resistant or apply a coat of waterproof sealant to protect them from the elements.
INTEGRATING INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SPACES
Use similar design elements and colour schemes in both areas to create a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor living spaces. For example, if your indoor living room features blue and white accents, carry these colours through to your poolside area with cushions, towels, pool floats and decorative items like lanterns and plant pots.
Another way to create a cohesive look is by using similar materials in both spaces. If your indoor flooring is wood or tile, consider matching the look for your poolside deck or patio. Tiles and decking come in plenty of varieties, with options that mimic the look of other materials. This helps create a visual connection between the two areas, making the transition from indoors to outdoors feel more natural.
With a little creativity and planning, you can transform your poolside area into a tidy and stylish oasis. By incorporating a range of organisational ideas, you’ll have plenty of storage solutions to keep everything neat and be well on your way to a clutter-free and inviting poolside retreat.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA
STARTING The first steps in learning to swim OUT
FAMILIARISING YOUR KIDS WITH THE POOL AT AN EARLY AGE WILL SET THEM ON THE PATH TO WATER SAFETY.
Swimming is a cherished national pastime in Australia, with our vast coastlines, rivers and swimming pools playing a central role in our culture. Teaching kids to swim from a young age is not only a valuable life skill but also a way to ensure their safety in and around water.
This guide for parents offers some important first steps in familiarising young children with water before they start professional swimming lessons, including games and activities designed to them comfortable in and around water, while emphasising good water safety practices.
GETTING STARTED: WATER FAMILIARISATION AT HOME
BATH TIME FUN
One of the easiest ways to introduce children to water is at bath time. Use the opportunity to make water a fun and enjoyable experience. Fill the bathtub with warm water and let your child play with floating toys. Encourage them to splash, pour water over their body and blow bubbles. Singing songs and playing gentle games can make bath time a fun experience.
GENTLE SHOWERS
Gradually introducing your child to water flowing over their head will get them used to water on their face and reduce their fear. Start by gently pouring water from a cup over their hair and face, ensuring it’s a fun activity. Encourage them to tilt their head back and enjoy the sensation of water flowing. From there, progress to the shower until they are comfortable with their entire head being wet.
INTRODUCTION TO THE POOL
MAKE IT A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE
The first pool visit — whether at home or an aquatic centre — should be a calm and positive experience. If you’re in a public facility, choose a quiet time when the pool is less busy. If you’re in the backyard, avoid crazy sessions with the big kids bombing, diving and yelling, as it can be overwhelming for little ones. It’s helpful to involve some favourite toys and a few floatation devices. Hold them while they sit at the edge of the pool and dip their feet in the water. Praise and encourage them for every small step they take.
GETTING IN
Once your child is comfy approaching the water, gradually help them get in. Hold them securely and let them feel the water’s buoyancy. Allow them to splash and play while you support them. Keep the initial sessions short and enjoyable.
USE OF FLOATATION DEVICES
Introduce floatation devices like arm floaties, pool noodles or a small floatation vest, which provide extra security and help build confidence. Use kickboards and other floatation devices to simulate swimming motions — as you hold one side, have your child hold on to the other and kick their legs to become familiar with the feeling of moving through the water. Always supervise closely, even with floatation aids.
STEPS TO BUILD CONFIDENCE
BLOWING BUBBLES
For the littlies, learning how to blow bubbles is a crucial step in understanding how to control breathing in and around water. Start by blowing bubbles in a cup of water during bath time, then move on to the pool. Make it a fun competition to see who can blow the most bubbles.
WATER TREASURE HUNT AND OTHER GAMES
As your child builds confidence and learns how to hold their breath, you can start to introduce underwater elements. Throw a few waterproof toys or colourful objects into steps, benches, ledges or other shallow parts of the pool to encourage a ‘treasure hunt’. This not only makes kids comfortable in water but also helps them practise submerging their face and holding their breath.
WATER SAFETY: A TOP PRIORITY
CONSTANT SUPERVISION
Of course, it goes without saying that you should never leave your child unattended in or near water, even for a moment. Drowning happens quickly and silently. Always stay within arm’s reach and put distractions, like phones, away.
SECURE YOUR POOL AREA
Ensure your home swimming pool is secure with a fence that has a self-closing, self-latching gate. Install pool alarms and keep rescue equipment nearby. Teach your kids about the importance of pool rules and safety from an early age.
EDUCATE ABOUT WATER SAFETY
Teach your child basic water safety rules, such as never swimming alone, always asking for permission before
getting in the water and understanding the dangers. Enrol them in formal swimming lessons as soon as they are ready to build their skills and knowledge.
GRADUAL PROGRESSION TO PROFESSIONAL LESSONS
ASSESSING READINESS
Every child is different, so assess their readiness for formal swimming lessons based on their comfort level and ability to follow instructions. Many swim schools in Australia offer classes for infants and toddlers, focusing on water safety and basic skills.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT SWIM SCHOOL
Select a reputable swim school with certified instructors who have experience teaching young children. Visit the facility to ensure it’s clean, well maintained and equipped with appropriate safety measures. Observe a class to see if the teaching style and environment are a good fit for you and your family.
SUPPORTING THEIR PROGRESS
Once your kids start formal lessons, support progress by practising the skills they learn in class at home. Encourage them continually, celebrate achievements and ensure that water activities are fun and enjoyable.
Teaching kids to swim is a rewarding experience that sets them up for a lifetime of enjoyment and safety around water. By starting with water familiarisation at home, introducing fun games and emphasising water safety, parents can help their children develop a love for swimming. Remember, patience and encouragement are key, and always prioritise safety by supervising closely and securing your pool area. With these steps, your child will be well prepared for professional swimming lessons and the countless adventures that await in the water.

SAVERS SPACE
In our increasingly dense cities, where every square metre counts, the dream of owning a swimming pool might seem far-fetched. But the proliferation of small pools is turning this dream into a reality for many city dwellers. Compact pools are designed for small spaces and tight budgets, with plenty of options on offer.
AN URBAN OASIS IS WITHIN REACH OF EVERY HOMEOWNER, THANKS TO THE RISE OF SMALL POOLS.
THE APPEAL OF SMALL POOLS
Small pools come in many forms and are perfect for projects where space is at a premium, often fitting into sites that defy expectations, including courtyards, terraces and even rooftops.
They are a cost-effective option, generally costing less than their larger counterparts when it comes to installation and maintenance. Smaller choices can still pack a punch, with some models offering swim jets and other features to keep active swimmers moving.
Thanks to increasing sophistication and innovation when it comes to designs and construction, small pools are a styling addition to any space, enhancing the overall ambiance and bringing a touch of luxury home.
CONSIDERATIONS FOR SMALL POOLS
Selecting the right small pool for your space involves several factors, including the following basics.
SPACE AVAILABILITY
Assess the available space in your yard or terrace. Measure the dimensions accurately and consider the layout. Don’t forget to account for additional features like decking, seating and landscaping.
PURPOSE
Determine the primary purpose of the pool. Is it for relaxation, exercise or both? This will influence the type of pool you choose. For instance, if swimming for exercise is a must, then a swim spa might be a better option than a plunge pool.
BUDGET
Budget is a critical factor in any building project. Consider not just the initial installation costs but also ongoing maintenance and operating expenses. Smaller pools generally have lower maintenance costs but features like heating and jets can increase expenses.
INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE
Different types of pools have varying installation requirements and maintenance needs. For example, in-ground pools typically require more extensive installation work compared to above-ground pools. Additionally, features like heating, lighting and filtration systems will affect maintenance needs and costs.
AESTHETICS AND CUSTOMISATION
Consider the look and feel you want to achieve. Some small pools can be customised with various finishes, tiles and lighting options to match your aesthetic preferences. Think about how the pool will integrate with your existing outdoor space and enhance its overall appeal.
INSTALLATION OPTIONS
When it comes to installing a small pool, you have several options, each with its own set of pros and cons.
In-ground pools
In-ground pools are built into the ground and can be customised to fit your space perfectly. They offer a seamless look and are often more durable.
Pros: Customisable, durable, aesthetically pleasing.
Cons: Higher installation costs, longer installation time.
Above-ground pools
Above-ground pools are quicker and less expensive to install. They are ideal for spaces where excavation is difficult or not possible.
Pros: Lower cost, quicker installation, portable.
Cons: May not blend as seamlessly with landscaping, limited or no customisation options.
Prefabricated pools
Prefabricated pools are pre-made and can be installed quickly. They come in various shapes and sizes and can be placed above-ground or partially in-ground.
Pros: Quick installation, costeffective, minimal disruption.
Cons : Limited customisation, may require additional landscaping to blend in.
ENHANCING YOUR SMALL POOL
To maximise the enjoyment and functionality of your small pool, consider adding some of these features:
• Heating: Extend your swimming season with a pool heater.
• Jets: Add hydrotherapy jets for relaxation and exercise.
• Lighting: Enhance the ambiance with underwater LED lighting.
• Water features: Consider adding fountains or waterfalls for a soothing effect.
• Seating: Incorporate built-in benches or loungers for added comfort.
Small pools are a fantastic option, but there are many, many alternatives to select from, so you’ll need to do your research and check out everything that’s on offer. For complete peace of mind contact a SPASA member, who can offer the best advice and the highest quality workmanship. With thoughtful planning and the right choice of pool, even the smallest urban backyard can become a refreshing retreat. PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS TO KEEP PESTS AT BAY.
We’ve all been there – stepping out into your backyard oasis, ready for a dip, only to find yourself stepping in duck poo, dodging frogs or watching a flotilla of boatmen paddle past on the pool surface.
As charming as it might sound, life isn’t a Disney movie, so sharing your pool with wildlife isn’t ideal. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to keep these uninvited guests out while making your poolside experience enjoyable and hassle-free.
CREATE A NO-DUCK ZONE

© Stock.Adobe.com/au/Fox
Ducks might be cute, but they can turn your pool into a feather-and-poo-filled mess. To deter these web-footed fiends, start by making your pool area less inviting. They can be hard to get rid of once they settle, so it may take a multi-pronged approach.
Pool covers: Invest in a good-quality pool cover. Ducks are less likely to land on covered pools because they can’t see the water. Ensure you cover up when the pool is not in use, especially during migration season.
Floating objects: If you must the leave the pool uncovered, throw in some floating objects like beach balls or toys to make the water surface less attractive. They create movement and disturbance, which these pesky ducks don’t much like — they prefer nice calm, open water.
Reflective surfaces: Shiny, moving reflections tend to spook ducks, so install some reflective tape or Mylar balloons around your pool. The movement and shine can spook them away.
Decoys: Place realistic predator decoys like owls or hawks near your pool. Move them around occasionally to keep the ducks guessing.
FROG-FREE SWIMMING
Frogs are another common pool intruder. While they might be great for your garden, they don’t belong in your pool. Here’s how to keep these hoppers at bay:
Mesh fencing: Adding a layer of mesh to your pool fencing can prevent frogs from jumping in. Ensure it’s fine enough to stop even the smallest frogs from squeezing through.
Keep it clean: Frogs are attracted to pools with algae and insects. Regularly clean your pool and maintain proper chemical levels to make the water less inviting to insects and thus to frogs.
Night lights: Frogs are nocturnal and prefer dark, damp places. Installing pool lights can deter them, as they will look for darker areas elsewhere.
Water features: Adding a small water feature like a fountain or waterfall to your pool can help. Frogs prefer still water for laying eggs, so moving water is less attractive.
WATER DRAGONS: PRETTY COOL BUT NOT IN THE POOL
Water dragons can be fascinating to watch, but they can become quite a nuisance if they decide your pool is their new hangout spot. Here’s how to keep these reptiles away: Remove food sources: Water dragons are attracted to insects and small animals around your pool. By keeping the area clean and free of food scraps or pet food, you can reduce the chances of them coming around.
Habitat modification: Trim back any overhanging branches or shrubs that provide easy access to your pool. Water dragons are excellent climbers, so eliminating their pathways can be effective.
Barrier fencing: Smooth pool fencing materials — like glass — can be enough to prevent water dragons from climbing over, though gaps between and underneath panels are essentially an open door. Consider blocking gaps and spaces with mesh.
Water spray: Install a motion-activated water spray system around your pool. The sudden burst of water will startle and deter water dragons without harming them.
BATTLING THE BOATMEN AND OTHER BEETLES
Beetles like boatmen can quickly turn your pool into an insect haven. Here’s how to keep these pesky bugs out of your water:
Proper pool maintenance: Regularly skim the pool surface, vacuum the bottom and maintain proper chemical levels. A clean pool is less attractive to insects.
Turn off lights: Insects are attracted to light. Turning off pool lights when not in use can reduce the number of beetles and other insects around your pool.
Insect traps: Place insect traps around your pool area. These can help reduce the overall insect population, making your pool less appealing to beetles.
Cover up: Just like with ducks, a pool cover is an effective way to keep beetles and other insects out. Ensure the cover fits snugly to prevent insects from slipping underneath.
GENERAL TIPS FOR ALL WILDLIFE
In addition to the specific tips for ducks, frogs, water dragons and beetles, here are some general strategies that can help keep all types of wildlife away from your pool:
Regular maintenance: Consistently clean your pool and surrounding area. Wildlife is less likely to be attracted to a well-maintained pool.
Secure pool chemicals: Store pool chemicals securely and out of reach. Strong-smelling chemicals can deter some animals from approaching your pool area.
Noise makers: Install wind chimes or other noise-making devices around your pool. The unexpected sounds can help scare away various types of wildlife.
Educate yourself: Learn about the wildlife common to your area and their habits. Understanding what attracts them can help you implement more effective deterrents.
Sharing your pool with wildlife might sound whimsical, but in reality, it can lead to mess and potential health hazards. Implementing some of these practical solutions will help keep unwanted visitors on the other side of the fence. Not only will your pool stay cleaner, but you’ll also enjoy a more pleasant and relaxing swimming experience. So gear up, get creative and take control of your pool to ensure it remains a sanctuary for you and your family — and not the local wildlife.

AN INSIDE JOB
Pool interior colours and finishes
THERE’S PLENTY OF CHOICE WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR POOL’S INTERIOR — FROM CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL THROUGH TO COLOUR AND FINISH.
Planning a swimming pool means making design choices about the interior colour and finish. It’s about more than aesthetic appeal, as choices also influence maintenance, longevity and the overall swimming experience. Read on while we delve into the pros and cons of some of the key options.
Design, in general, is subject to change throughout time — clothing, cars and architectural elements from the 1970s don’t share too
much in common with their 2024 counterparts. To a degree, swimming pools are the same, so you’ll see a prevalence of a particular interior colour or a paving style in one era that may not have enjoyed the same popularity just a few years ago.
But the beauty of building a swimming pool is that you can make whatever design choices you like — particularly if you opt for a concrete construction, which offers a lot of customisation options and doesn’t tie you to current trends.
Of course, some choices may be predetermined by the type of pool you want. For example, you’ll find all fibreglass pools feature a smooth, nonporous surface, so that’s something you won’t have to think about.
LIGHT VERSUS DARK
There are literally hundreds of colour choices when it comes to swimming pool interiors, but before you try to narrow it down, think about whether you prefer the look of a light or dark swimming pool.
LIGHT
Light colours can give the illusion of size, making your pool appear larger and potentially more inviting. Shades like white, light blue, and sand reflect more light, creating a bright and open feel. A lighter pool interior also improves underwater visibility, which can significantly help with water safety, especially for families with young children.
If you remember your high school science, you’ll know that a lighter surface reflects light, which will keep the water temperature a little cooler — a pretty big plus in hot climates. Dirt, debris and algae are more visible on light surfaces, which may help prompt a more efficient
cleaning and maintenance program.
On the downside, light surfaces are more prone to visible staining from leaves, dirt and chemical imbalances. Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential to keep the pool looking pristine. With proper care, light-coloured finishes can last a long time, though they might need occasional resurfacing due to wear and tear.
The reflective nature of light colours can cause glare and make it hard to look at the pool during peak sunlight hours.
DARK
Darker colours like navy blue, deep green or even black create a sleek, modern look that can complement
a variety of house and landscape designs. Those darker surfaces will absorb more sunlight, helping to naturally heat the water — useful in cooler regions. Of course, darker finishes are better at hiding dirt and minor stains, so every bit of leaf litter won’t spell disaster.
It’s worth noting that visibility is reduced in darker interiors, especially in deeper pools, which may be a safety concern if you have little swimmers. While heat retention is a bonus in cooler climates, you may regret opting for a darker pool in tropical regions, where the water can remain uncomfortably warm. Over time, dark finishes may fade, due to prolonged exposure to sunlight.
... the beauty of building a swimming pool is that you can make whatever design choices you like. ” “
SMOOTH VERSUS ROUGH
This depends on the material construction to a large degree. Fibreglass pools are naturally quite smooth, while concrete tends to be rougher. That said, a fully tiled concrete pool is pretty smooth as well, so it’s worth having a think about the differences.
SMOOTH
Smooth finishes like polished plaster, tile or fibreglass are gentle on the skin, which reduces the risk of abrasions. They are easier to clean as dirt and algae have fewer places to cling, so a simple brushing or robotic cleaner will efficiently maintain cleanliness.
If you’re looking for a sleek and luxurious appearance, smooth surfaces will deliver and generally enhance the overall look of the pool.
On the other side of the coin, smooth surfaces can be slippery when wet, which can increase the risk of slips and falls, especially in shallow areas or on steps and ledges. You may also pay for that luxurious look, as high-quality smooth finishes like glass tiles can be more expensive to install and repair.
ROUGH
Rough finishes like exposed aggregate or pebblecrete provide better traction than smooth options, which can help
reduce the risk of slips and falls. These surfaces are typically more durable and resistant to wear and tear, making them suitable for hightraffic pools. Rough finishes tend to blend well with natural landscapes, which gives your pool a more organic and rustic appearance.
Of course, rough surfaces can be abrasive to the skin, causing discomfort or minor injuries, especially for children or frequent swimmers. They’re also a little more challenging to clean, as dirt and algae will accumulate in crevices, requiring more intensive scrubbing and maintenance.
Trying to visualise what your pool will look like based on small samples can be very difficult. Do plenty of research — get online and look at
photos and ask your builder for as much information as possible to help you make an informed decision. Display centres are a great way to compare options side by side and don’t forget that the weather plays a huge part in your perception as well. What looks great on a bright sunny day may not give you the same thrill under cloud cover or at night when lit up using underwater fittings. Think about how you see your pool — is it simply a place to cool off and exercise, or is the aesthetic aspect equally important? A little thought in the initial stages will help you narrow the options and make the entire decision-making process easier.

ANATOMY OF A
SWIMMING POOL
Tanning ledges and beach entries
Welcome to another instalment of our “Anatomy of a swimming pool” series. Whether you’re a prospective or current swimming pool owner, understanding the various elements of a pool is crucial for making informed decisions about design, maintenance and upgrades. Today, we’re diving into two luxurious and increasingly popular features: tanning ledges and beach entries. These features not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of your pool but also offer practical benefits that can transform your swimming experience.
TANNING LEDGES: A POOLSIDE PARADISE
A tanning ledge, also known as a sun shelf, Baja shelf or lounge ledge, is a shallow, flat area typically situated at the entry of the pool. This platform is usually 15 to 30 centimetres deep, providing an ideal space for sunbathing, relaxing and wading. Tanning ledges are often equipped with lounge chairs, umbrellas and even built-in bubblers for added comfort and style.
WHY
BUILD A TANNING LEDGE?
1. Versatility: Tanning ledges cater to a wide range of activities. Whether you want to sunbathe, supervise children or simply cool off without fully submerging, this feature provides a versatile space for all ages.
2. Aesthetic appeal: A tanning ledge adds a sleek, modern look to your pool. It can be designed with various finishes, such as textured concrete, mosaic tiles or natural stone, to complement your backyard oasis.
3. Functional relaxation: The shallow water on a tanning ledge keeps you cool while you soak up the sun, offering a perfect blend of relaxation and refreshment. It’s an ideal spot for reading, socialising or enjoying a drink.
4. Pet-friendly: If you have pets that enjoy the water, a tanning ledge offers a safe, shallow area for them to
splash around without venturing into deeper waters.
INDUSTRY TRENDS AND INNOVATIONS
The popularity of tanning ledges has spurred several innovations in their design and functionality. Integrated seating, built-in jets and adjustable water depths are becoming standard features. Additionally, LED lighting and heating elements are being incorporated to enhance usability and ambiance during evening hours.
BEACH ENTRIES: SEAMLESS ACCESS TO RELAXATION
A beach entry, also known as a zero-entry or sloped entry, mimics the gradual slope of a natural beach, allowing you to walk into the pool without the need for steps or ladders. The slope starts at ground level and gradually descends into the water, creating a seamless transition from deck to pool.
WHY BUILD A BEACH ENTRY?
1. Accessibility: Beach entries are ideal for individuals with mobility
challenges, including the elderly and those with disabilities. The gradual slope provides easy and safe access without the need for steps.
2. Child-friendly: children can safely enter and exit the pool with ease, making beach entries a popular choice for families. The shallow entry area also serves as a safe play zone for kids.
3. Visual appeal: The natural, flowing design of a beach entry enhances the visual appeal of your pool, creating a resort-like atmosphere in your backyard. It blends seamlessly with landscaping features like rocks, plants and waterfalls.
4. Multi-use space: Similar to tanning ledges, the shallow entry area of a beach entry can be used for lounging, sunbathing and socialising. It’s a versatile space that adds to the overall functionality of your pool.
INDUSTRY TRENDS AND INNOVATIONS
Recent trends in beach entry design include the use of advanced materials that mimic natural textures, such
as sand and pebbles. There is also a growing interest in incorporating water features like cascades and fountains at the entry point to offer a multi-sensory swimming experience.
Tanning ledges and beach entries are more than just luxurious additions to your swimming pool — they offer practical benefits that enhance the overall enjoyment and usability of your pool. Whether you’re looking to create a serene retreat for relaxation or a fun, accessible space for family activities, these features provide the perfect blend of form and function. As you explore the possibilities for your swimming pool, consider how these elements can transform your backyard into a personal paradise.
Cost effective year-round comfort
Heat pumps offer an efficient and environmentally friendly solution for maintaining comfortable water temperatures yearround. The advanced heat pumps on offer from AstralPool utilise inverter technology to harness heat energy from the surrounding air, transferring it to the pool water through a process of compression and condensation. This method of heating is highly efficient, making it a costeffective and sustainable choice for pool owners.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
One of the primary benefits of installing a heat pump is their exceptional energy efficiency. Unlike traditional heating methods such as gas heaters, which rely on consuming natural gas or Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) to generate heat, heat pumps simply transfer existing heat from the air to the water,
making them significantly more energy efficient. This not only reduces operating costs but also minimizes the carbon footprint associated with heating a swimming pool, contributing to a more sustainable environment.
QUIET OPERATION
AstralPool heat pumps are also designed to operate quietly and efficiently, providing consistent and reliable heating performance without causing disruption or noise pollution. This allows pool owners to prioritise peace and tranquility, and enjoy their outdoor spaces without being disturbed by the noise of a running heater.
EASE OF INTEGRATION
Unlike solar heating systems, which require extensive roof space and complex plumbing installations, heat pumps can be easily integrated into existing pool systems with minimal disruption.
AstralPool heat pumps can also be integrated with different automations systems like the AstralPool Connect 10 or the AstralPool Halo Chlor to be seamlessly added to an established pool equipment eco-system.
EXTEND THE SWIMMING SEASON
Offering precise temperature control, heat pumps allow pool owners to maintain their desired water temperature with accuracy and consistency. This ensures optimal comfort for swimmers and extends the swimming season, allowing pools to be enjoyed earlier in
the Spring and later into Autumn. The AstralPool heat pumps are available in a range of sizes and capacities to suit different pool sizes and heating requirements, ensuring that there is a suitable option for every application.
Heat pumps provide a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution for maintaining comfortable water temperatures year-round, allowing pool owners to enjoy their outdoor spaces to the fullest. Scan the QR code and explore which AstralPool heat pump best suits your pool.
